How much is an evening desert safari in Dubai?
Three of our evening safaris leave from Dubai, at three price points.
₹2,918, the standard evening safari. The red dunes safari with a camp dinner is the one most families need: afternoon pickup from a Dubai city hotel in a shared 4x4, about 30 minutes of dune driving, a sunset stop, then a camp with a dinner buffet, a short camel ride, henna, and tanoura and fire shows. Vegetarian dishes are on every buffet; Jain food is on request. "Red dunes" refers to the red sand the drive crosses, not a separate tier. Shisha at your seat, a VIP or private majlis, or a private 4x4 are priced as separate options.
₹3,451, the operator's premium version. The Premium Desert Safari runs about six hours with hotel pickup. We send the operator's programme, including what "premium" adds, before you pay, so you can compare it with the standard trip.
₹6,999, our Dubai Evening Desert Safari. This costs more than twice the standard safari, so here is what its page lists. The Dubai Evening Desert Safari is ₹6,999 per person, starting at 2:30, 3:00 or 3:30 pm and back around 9:30 pm: dune bashing at golden hour, sandboarding runs, a camel ride with a falcon photo stop, then a camp BBQ with henna, shisha, tanoura, belly dance and a fire show. Sandboarding and the falcon stop are what the ₹2,918 safari leaves out. Ask us to confirm hotel pickup from your hotel in your written quote.
Our honest advice: if you want the dunes, the sunset and a camp dinner, book the ₹2,918 safari. Pay for the ₹6,999 one only if sandboarding, the falcon stop or a fixed start time matters to you.
Morning, sunrise or evening: which desert safari should you pick?
- Evening, if it's your first safari and you want dunes, sunset, dinner and shows.
- Morning, if your evenings are taken by a dhow cruise or the Burj Khalifa, or you fly out in the afternoon. The Morning Desert Safari from ₹2,196 is three hours, with no meals or shows.
- Sunrise, if you want the dunes quiet and cool and don't mind a pre-dawn pickup. We don't advise it for seniors, because of the early start and the rough drive.
The season matters as much as the slot. Figures from the UAE's National Center of Meteorology, published by the World Meteorological Organization, put Dubai's average daily high at 40.6°C in July, against 26.2°C in December and 24.0°C in January, when average lows are 15.4°C and 13.7°C. The red dunes safari's notes say the desert gets cold after sunset from November to February, so carry a jacket or shawl.
Can you do an overnight desert safari from Dubai?
Yes, in two ways.
- The overnight desert safari with a balloon flight, ₹49,126 per person, is about 17 hours with shared transfers: a night in the desert, then a hot-air balloon flight. We get the meals and extras from the operator in writing before you pay.
- The Abu Dhabi overnight desert camp, ₹9,840 per person, is about 18 hours: shared transfers, the safari drive, a BBQ dinner, a night in the dunes and breakfast. Bedding and washroom details are not confirmed, so we don't suggest it for grandparents who need a firm mattress, or for toddlers.
We don't list an overnight camp in Ras Al Khaimah at the moment.
What is a sundowner dune dinner safari in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?
"Sundowner dune dinner safari" is a name some operators give an evening safari: a dune drive timed for sunset, then dinner at a desert camp. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is a protected area of 225 square kilometres, about 5% of the emirate, according to the Dubai Media Office (July 2020). Only a small part is set aside for tourism, under controls and with professional guides, and in 2020 the reserve counted about 800 Arabian oryx and 450 Arabian gazelles.
None of the safaris in our table names the reserve as its location today. If driving inside the reserve matters to you, tell us before booking and we will ask the operator where the drive and the camp are.
What costs extra on a desert safari?
These are the extras our listings name, so they are not in the "from" price:
- quad bikes, dune buggies, sandboarding sessions and photographs sold at the red dunes camp;
- drinks beyond what the camp serves with dinner;
- shisha, a VIP or private majlis, or a private 4x4;
- a Polaris ride on the morning safari, or a quad bike ride on the sunrise safari;
- pickup from Sharjah, Jebel Ali or the Palm, where the operator may add a surcharge;
- tips for the driver, customary but not compulsory.
Is a desert safari safe for children, older parents and pregnant travellers?
These come from the notes on our listings.
- Pregnancy. The red dunes safari's notes say pregnant women should not do the dune drive. Ask us about a camp-only arrangement.
- Young children. The same notes say children under about five should skip the dune drive, and anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in front and eat lightly before pickup. More ideas in things to do in Dubai with kids.
- Older parents. A fit senior who sits up front and asks for a gentle drive usually manages the evening safari, but anyone with a back, neck or heart condition should skip the dune section. See Dubai with elderly parents for an easier plan.
- Quads and buggies. Not for anyone pregnant or with back, neck or heart trouble; the operator sets minimum ages on the day.
