The story

This is the Gulf desert evening done from Ras Al Khaimah, where the dunes sit between the coast and the Hajar Mountains rather than beside a city skyline. A 4x4 collects you from your hotel in the afternoon and drives out to the sand. On the shared option the operator names dune bashing, a camel ride, a BBQ dinner and shows; on the private option the vehicle is yours and the operator names the BBQ dinner and shows, with the pace of the drive set with your driver. Both end at a desert camp and have you back at the hotel about six hours after pickup.

What it feels like: the sand here is a paler orange than you expect, and the mountains stand grey along the horizon the whole evening. The dune drive is the noisy part, with the vehicle tilting and sliding and somebody in the back laughing too loudly. Then the engine stops, the wind drops, and the sunset happens without anyone speaking. The camel ride is short and slow and smells of camel. At the camp there are carpets, low seating and lanterns, a grill going, and after dinner the shows on a small stage. Then the stars, which are the real reason to come this far from Dubai's lights.

Who this suits, and why: friends groups and the family with teenagers, because the dune drive and the camp are made for them; couples for the sunset and a quiet dinner away from the resorts. The school-holiday family with children from about six upwards is fine on the shared option. It is not the pick for anyone who gets car-sick, for pregnant travellers, or for grandparents with back or neck trouble; for them the private option lets you ask for a gentle drive, or take the camel ride on its own.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Collection from your Ras Al Khaimah hotel in the afternoon by shared 4x4 (shared option) or your own 4x4 (private option). Your captain confirms the pickup window with your voucher.

  2. The drive out of town and onto the sand. On the shared option the driver takes the vehicle over the dunes; on the private option tell the driver how gentle or lively you want it.

  3. A short camel ride, named on the shared option, and a stop on the dunes for the light and the photographs.

  4. Time at the camp, a BBQ buffet dinner and the evening shows. Which shows, and what else the camp offers on your date, is confirmed by the operator with the voucher; we do not promise it here.

  5. The drive back to your hotel, about six hours after pickup.

Know before you go

  • Dune bashing is a rough, tilting drive over soft sand. Skip it if you are pregnant, have back, neck or heart trouble, or get car-sick easily; on the shared option you cannot opt out mid-drive, so choose the private option and ask for a gentle drive.
  • The operator names dune bashing and the camel ride on the shared option only. Whether the private option includes a dune drive or a camel ride, and how lively the drive is, is confirmed by your captain before you pay.
  • Small children: many operators set a minimum age for the dune drive and infants ride without a car seat. Tell your captain the ages in your group so the operator confirms what applies.
  • Wear light, covered clothing and closed shoes or sandals you can shake sand out of; carry a light layer for after dark, which is cool from November to March. Sunglasses and a scarf help against blown sand.
  • Eat light before the drive and carry water. Motion-sickness tablets, if you use them, should be taken before pickup.
  • Vegetarian and Jain food: the camp dinner is a BBQ buffet with vegetarian dishes usual but not promised to be Jain; ask your captain to check with the operator for your date.
  • The shows are named on the sheet without detail; what is performed, and whether it runs during Ramadan, is confirmed by the operator with the voucher.
  • Pickup windows can be wide because a shared vehicle collects several hotels; be ready in the lobby at the start of the window on your voucher.
  • Availability and the pickup time are confirmed by the operator when your captain books; a booking can be declined by the supplier for a price change, allocation or stop-sale.
  • Prices are per person in INR. GST and TCS on international bookings are shown in your written quote.
