The story

Before oil, the Gulf's money was pearls, and Al Rams, the northernmost corner of Ras Al Khaimah under the Hajar Mountains, was a pearling village. The Suwaidi Pearl Farm, opened in 2004 by Abdulla Rashed Al Suwaidi by the farm's own site, keeps that alive on a floating farmhouse in the creek. The operator's tour is the one the tourism authority describes: a traditional wooden pearling boat from Al Rams Corniche, a slow run through the mangroves and coastal wetlands, then the House of Pearls itself, where you see the divers' tools and the trader's box, hear how a season on the pearl banks worked, and open a cultured oyster to see what is inside. The tourism authority puts the chance of a pearl at about 60 per cent. Two and a half hours.

What it feels like: slow and green. The boat is wooden and low, the water is flat and the colour of weak tea, and the mangroves close in on both sides with herons standing in them. The mountains are right there behind the village. On the pontoon it is shaded and quiet; someone lays out the tools, the nose clip and the weighted rope and the basket, and explains what a diver did on one breath, and the room goes still. Then the oyster: a knife, a twist, and either a small grey-white pearl in your palm or a laugh and a shrug. For a family from Ahmedabad, the closest thing to it is the story of a trade you know from your grandparents, told by the people who still do it.

Who this suits, and why: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because it is seated, shaded and unhurried, with a story worth an hour of anyone's time; the school-holiday family, whose children will remember the oyster more than any theme park; and the couple staying on Al Marjan who wants one quiet morning that is not a beach. The friends group on a Jais day is unlikely to make time for it. Take closed shoes for the boat and the pontoon.
