The story

This is the Dubai evening most people from Ahmedabad remember first. A 4x4 collects you from your hotel in the afternoon and drives out past the last flyovers to the red dunes on the desert side of the city. Tyre pressure is let down at the edge of the sand, the driver waits for the convoy, and then for about half an hour the car climbs, tilts and slides over dunes the height of a three-storey building. It is a fairground ride on sand: the children shriek, the grandparents grip the handle, and everyone is laughing by the second dune.

The convoy stops on a high dune for sunset. The sand turns from orange to deep red, the air cools quickly, and the silence is the thing you notice. From there it is a short drive to the camp: carpets and low cushions around a sand floor, lanterns, a short camel ride, henna, Arabic coffee and dates, and then dinner from a buffet that carries vegetarian dishes alongside the grills. The shows start after dark, the tanoura (the spinning-skirt dance) and a fire act among them, and you are back at the hotel around 10 pm.

Who it suits: families with children of about five and over (the dune drive is rough, so ask for a gentle drive if anyone gets car-sick), friends groups who want the classic first night in Dubai, and couples who will enjoy the sunset stop more than the shows. Fit, active seniors manage it well sitting in front with a gentle driver. Anyone who is pregnant or has a back, neck or heart problem should not do the dune drive; tell your captain and ask whether a camp-only pickup is possible for that person.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. A 4x4 collects you from your Dubai hotel in the afternoon. On the shared option the vehicle collects guests from several hotels, so allow up to 45 minutes of pickups before you leave the city. The private option collects only your group.

  2. About 45 minutes' drive to the desert. Tyre pressure is lowered at the edge of the sand and the convoy sets off: 25 to 30 minutes of dune driving.

  3. A stop on a high dune as the sun goes down. Walk, take photographs, and watch the colour of the sand change.

  4. A short camel ride, henna, Arabic coffee and dates. Shisha is served at your seat on the shisha option; the VIP majlis option seats you in a reserved majlis area.

  5. Buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, then the camp's shows for about an hour after dark.

  6. Drop back at your hotel at around 10 pm.

  • Shared pickups follow a route, so the pickup window is wide and the vehicle may collect other guests after you.
  • Vegetarian food is on every camp buffet. If you need Jain food, say so when you enquire; the camps cook a standard buffet and your captain will tell you honestly what is possible.
  • Your the operator voucher lists the exact inclusions for the option you choose; the captain shares it with you before you pay.
