The story

The sunrise safari is the desert without the crowd and without the evening heat. A 4x4 collects you from your Abu Dhabi hotel while it is still dark and drives out to the dunes so that you are on the sand as the sun comes up. The shared option, as the operator names it, includes a camel ride; the private option gives you the vehicle and the driver to yourselves, so the pace is set with you. Four hours door to door, which leaves the whole day free for the Grand Mosque or Yas Island.

What it feels like: cold, then gold. In the winter months the sand is cool enough to want a jacket at six in the morning, and the first light turns the dunes from grey to pink to orange in the space of a few minutes. It is quiet in a way the evening safari never is: no camp music, no crowd, just the wind on the ridge and the camel's slow rocking walk. By eight the heat is building and you are on your way back to breakfast at the hotel, which is the sensible order in Abu Dhabi.

Who this suits, and why: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because the dune drive can be asked to be gentle on the private option and there is no late night; couples who want the photographs without a hundred other phones in them; and the family with toddlers, for whom a morning is far easier than an evening that ends at ten.
