The story

This is the classic Gulf evening, done from Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai, which usually means quieter dunes and a shorter drive out of the city. A 4x4 collects you from your hotel in the afternoon and heads for the desert. On the shared option the driver takes the vehicle over the dunes, the part the operator calls dune bashing, before stopping for sunset; on the private option the vehicle is yours and the pace is set with you. Both end at a desert camp with a BBQ dinner, and you are back at the hotel about six hours after pickup.

What it feels like: the dunes are a different colour every twenty minutes. Orange on the drive in, gold at sunset, blue-grey after, and then the stars come out in a way they never do over a city.
