The story

This is the desert done before the heat, and done for the thrill rather than the dinner. You are collected from your Abu Dhabi hotel in the morning on a shared transfer and driven out to the dunes. The operator names two things: dune bashing, where a driver takes a 4x4 up and over the soft sand at changing speeds, and sandboarding, where you slide down a dune slope on a board. Four hours after pickup you are back at the hotel, with lunch and the rest of the day still ahead of you.

What it feels like: the dune drive is the loud part. The vehicle climbs a ridge, pauses, then tips over the top and everyone in the back grips the seat and laughs; Visit Abu Dhabi puts an average session at about 45 minutes, depending on the operator. Then the engine stops and the desert is suddenly quiet. Sandboarding is slower and sillier: you sit or stand on the board at the top of a slope, push off, wobble, and mostly end up with sand in your pockets. First-timers use the gentler slopes. The light at that hour is soft and the sand is still cool enough to walk on, which is exactly why the morning is the time to do it; by noon the desert is hot.

Who this suits, and why: the friends group and the family with teenagers, because both halves of the morning are active and a little rough, which is the point for them; couples who want the dunes without giving up an evening; and the adventure-minded traveller who wants a first taste of sandboarding without a trip to Liwa. It is not the pick for babies, who are not allowed on a dune drive, for anyone pregnant, or for grandparents with back, neck or heart trouble. For them the sunrise safari is the gentler way to see the same sand: its shared option comes with a camel ride, and its private option lets you ask for a gentle drive.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Collection from your Abu Dhabi hotel in the morning on a shared transfer. The operator gives no fixed time; the pickup window is on your voucher and your captain tells you before you pay.

  2. A driver takes the 4x4 over the dunes at changing speeds, seatbelts on throughout. Visit Abu Dhabi puts an average session at about 45 minutes, depending on the operator.

  3. Time on a dune slope with a board. Beginners start on a gentle slope; sit down if standing feels like too much.

  4. The drive back to your hotel, about four hours after pickup.

  • Sandboarding on the dunes, as named on the operator's list

  • Camel rides, quad biking or any other paid desert activity
  • Tips and personal expenses
  • Anything not listed under inclusions

Know before you go

  • Babies are not permitted on a dune drive because of the speed, and Visit Abu Dhabi discourages it for anyone pregnant or with a medical condition. If that is anyone in your group, choose the sunrise safari on a private vehicle and ask for a gentle drive.
  • Seatbelts are required for the whole dune drive. If you get car-sick, eat light beforehand and take any tablets before pickup.
  • Minimum ages for dune bashing and sandboarding are set by the operator and are not on the operator's list. Tell your captain the ages of any children so the operator confirms them before you pay.
  • Wear light, loose clothing, sunglasses and a hat, and use a high-SPF sunscreen, as Visit Abu Dhabi advises. Shoes you can shake sand out of are easiest; expect sand everywhere after the boarding.
  • The morning is chosen for the heat: desert temperatures climb quickly after mid-morning, especially from May to September. Carry water whatever the month.
  • The operator names no food on this product. Eat before pickup or plan breakfast on return, and ask your captain whether water or refreshments are provided.
  • Pickup windows on a shared transfer can be wide because several hotels are collected; be in the lobby at the start of the window on your voucher.
  • Availability and the pickup time are confirmed by the operator when your captain books; a booking can be declined by the supplier for a price change, allocation or stop-sale.
  • Prices are per person in INR. GST and TCS on international bookings are shown in your written quote.
