Best Places to Visit in India in October 2026

October is one of the best months to travel in India. The monsoon has just retreated, the air is clear, the landscapes are at their greenest, and the punishing summer heat is months away.
It is also festival season — and this year the dates matter more than usual. Dussehra falls on Tuesday 20 October 2026, late in the month rather than early. Diwali is on 8 November 2026, so the Diwali rush and its price surge land after October, not during it. Most "best of October" lists assume otherwise. Travel in the first half of the month and you get post-monsoon weather at pre-festival prices.
Here are the best places to visit across India this October, grouped by the kind of trip you are planning.
1. Munnar, Kerala — for misty hills and tea gardens
Kerala's monsoon ends around late September, so October is when Munnar looks its absolute best: rolling tea estates in deep green, waterfalls still running full, and cool mountain air without the crowds that arrive in December.
Fly into Kochi and drive up. A day in the estates works as a add-on, or take the full hill circuit — Munnar: A Day in the Tea or the longer Munnar–Thekkady Hill Circuit.
2. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan — for desert landscapes
October opens Rajasthan's travel season. Daytime temperatures finally drop out of the extreme, which makes it comfortable to walk Jaisalmer Fort, ride a camel into the Thar and camp under genuinely clear skies.
Book early — demand climbs fast towards the winter peak. See Jaisalmer: Desert Camp & Camel Safari or the fuller Rajasthan Desert: Jaisalmer.
3. Rishikesh, Uttarakhand — for the river and the foothills
With the monsoon gone, the Ganga settles into ideal rafting condition and the foothill trails dry out. October also brings clearer mountain views if you want to carry on further into the Himalaya.
Try Rishikesh: River & Ridge, or just the jump — the 83-metre letting go.
4. Goa — for beaches before the peak
October is Goa's shoulder-season sweet spot. The rains have stopped, the shacks are going back up, and prices sit well below the December–January peak. Beach weather without peak-season rates or peak-season crowds.
Pick your half of the state: Goa North: The Party Week or Goa South: Slow Beaches. Coming overland from Bangalore? We wrote a full guide to the Bangalore–Goa bus.
5. Udaipur, Rajasthan — for palaces and full lakes
Post-monsoon Udaipur has water in its lakes, which is the whole point of the City of Lakes and not guaranteed later in the year. Comfortable days, dramatically better photographs, and Dussehra on 20 October adds to the atmosphere.
See Udaipur: The Lake City or pair it with the hill station — Rajasthan: Udaipur & Mount Abu.
6. Coorg, Karnataka — for coffee country
Close to home if you are travelling from Bangalore. Coorg in October is lush and cool straight after the monsoon, the estates at their greenest and the waterfalls still loud.
A day inside a working plantation — Coorg: Inside a Coffee Estate — or the weekend version, the Coorg Coffee Trail.
7. Darjeeling, West Bengal — for tea and mountain views
October gives Darjeeling some of the clearest skies of the year, which means a real chance at sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill — something monsoon-season visitors miss entirely.
Fly to Bagdogra and climb from there. See Darjeeling: The Kanchenjunga Sunrise or the short, charming Toy Train.
Planning your October trip
October sits right before the winter rush, so prices are better now and climb towards December. A few things worth knowing:
- Book 3–4 weeks ahead to hold shoulder-season pricing before it moves.
- Plan around 20 October. Dussehra crowds and rates spike around it; the first two weeks are the quiet, cheaper window.
- Diwali is 8 November this year, not October — so the late-month rush is smaller than most years.
- Pack for warm days and cool evenings, especially in Munnar, Coorg and Darjeeling.
FAQs
Is October a good time to travel in India?
Yes — it is one of the best months. The monsoon is over across most of the country, temperatures are comfortable, the landscape is still green from the rains, and prices have not yet reached the December peak.
Which is better in October, Goa or Kerala?
Both work well. Goa suits you if you want beaches with far fewer people than peak season and shack culture just reopening. Kerala, and Munnar in particular, suits you if you want cool hill weather and greenery at its absolute peak right after the rains.
Is Rajasthan too hot to visit in October?
No. By October the extreme summer heat has passed and daytime temperatures are comfortable for forts, city walking and desert safaris. Nights in the desert start getting genuinely cold, so carry a layer.
When are Dussehra and Diwali in 2026?
Dussehra is Tuesday 20 October 2026 and Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. That means October's festival crowding is concentrated around the third week, and the Diwali surge falls outside the month entirely.
