The story

Coorg runs on coffee, cardamom and the Kodava art of hospitality. This weekend puts you inside a working estate: mist walks between the bushes, a roasting session where you finally taste what 'fresh' means, and meals that make the case for Kodava food as India's most underrated cuisine.

Leave Bangalore on Friday night and sleep through the drive, arriving on the estate for sunrise, which is the correct way to use a two-night weekend. Coorg is one of India's biggest coffee-growing regions, and the homestay is inside a working plantation rather than beside one.
The estate day. A plantation walk explaining the difference between arabica and robusta and why the coffee grows under shade trees with pepper vines up them, then pulping, drying and a roast. Abbey Falls in the afternoon, and Raja's Seat for sunset over the valley. Pandi curry for dinner, which is Kodava pork and unlike anything else in India.
Dubare elephant camp in the morning, which is a forest department facility on the river where the elephants are bathed rather than ridden, then the drive home. Two nights, a great deal of coffee, and a genuinely different cuisine ninety minutes off the Bangalore-Mangalore highway.
