The story

Hampi was once one of the largest and richest cities in the world; what's left is nearly 29 square kilometres of temples, palaces and boulders arranged like a god's abandoned game. Cycle the ruins at dawn, spin across the river in a coracle, climb Matanga for the sunset every photographer chases.

Overnight sleeper both ways; weekends only; legs required.

  1. The Friday night bus, arriving at sunrise, which is a good way to first see Hampi: boulders the size of buildings with temples between them in low orange light. The sacred centre on foot while it is cool, starting at Virupaksha, a temple dating to around the 7th century that has been in worship for many centuries.

  2. The ruins properly. The Vittala temple with its stone chariot and the musical pillars, the royal enclosure, the elephant stables and the Lotus Mahal. Then Matanga Hill for sunset, which is a twenty-minute scramble and gives you the whole fallen city of Vijayanagara at once.

  3. A coracle across the Tungabhadra in the morning, which is a round basket boat spun rather than rowed, then brunch at a riverside cafe on the far bank before the bus home. Two nights, one empire that was among the largest cities on earth in 1500 and is now boulders and temples.

15–29 days: 50% of the package cost.

7–14 days: 75% of the package cost.

Under 7 days or no-show: no refund.

One free date-change to a later departure is allowed up to 15 days out.
