The story

Munnar first: tea gardens sculpted over every visible hill, dawn walks between the bushes, the museum where you finally learn what 'orthodox' tea means. Then over the ghats to Thekkady, where Periyar's forests hide elephants and the spice gardens explain your kitchen shelf.

Ends with a Kathakali night and a jeep to Top Station's cloud balcony.

  1. Fly into Kochi and climb to Munnar, about four hours, with waterfalls beside the road most of the way in the wetter months. The gain is roughly 1,600 metres and the temperature falls with it, which after the coast is the first pleasure of the trip.

  2. A dawn walk in the tea gardens while the mist is still in the folds of the hills, with a picker to explain what two leaves and a bud actually means in practice. The factory for the processing, and Top Station in the afternoon for the view into Tamil Nadu, cloud permitting.

  3. Across the ghats to Thekkady, about four hours through cardamom country. A spice plantation walk with a planter, who will make you smell and taste everything, then a Kathakali and Kalaripayattu evening: one is centuries-old dance-drama, the other a martial art, and both are performed properly here.

  4. Bamboo rafting on Periyar lake in the morning, which is silent, slow and the best chance of seeing elephants on the bank, since a raft does not announce itself the way a boat does. The standard lake cruise is the alternative for anyone who would rather not paddle.

  5. Down to Kochi and the flight home. Four nights across two hill stations in the Western Ghats, one built on tea and one on spice, three hours apart and completely different in character.
