The story

Coorg (Kodagu) grows more of India's coffee than any other district — around a third of the country's crop — under a canopy of silver oak and pepper vine, and a working estate is a very different thing from a café.

You walk the rows, see the pulping and drying, and taste it at the end. If you come in March the whole district smells of coffee blossom for about a week, which is worth planning around.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. A full day inside a working plantation rather than a demonstration one. The morning walk explains what is actually growing: arabica and robusta under shade trees, with pepper vines trained up the trunks and cardamom below, which is why Coorg estates smell the way they do. You see pulping, the drying yards and a roast, and taste the result. If you time it to late February or March you may catch the flowering, when the whole estate goes white for about a week and the smell carries for kilometres. Abbey Falls around midday, a short walk from the road through coffee and spice to a hanging bridge opposite the fall. Raja's Seat for sunset, a small garden on the edge of the ridge where the Kodagu kings watched the light go over the valley, and where the whole town still does.
