Rishikesh: River & Ridge
Rishikesh & Shivpuri, Uttarakhand
Highlights
- 16km of Grade III whitewater from Shivpuri to Rishikesh
- Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat, standing in the crowd rather than watching it
- Beatles Ashram — the abandoned domes, now covered in murals
- The Neer Garh waterfall walk above Laxman Jhula
- A dawn yoga session with a teacher who has done this for thirty years
The story
Rishikesh is two towns wearing the same name. One does yoga at six in the morning and eats in silence. The other straps into a raft at Shivpuri and screams through Roller Coaster rapid.
You get both. Mornings on the water, afternoons on the ridge above it, and evenings at Triveni Ghat where a few hundred people sing the river down for the night.
