Darjeeling: The Kanchenjunga Sunrise
Darjeeling & Tiger Hill, West Bengal
Highlights
- Sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill — the whole reason you came
- The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a working UNESCO World Heritage line
- A tea estate walk and a proper tasting — first flush against second
- Ghoom Monastery and the Batasia Loop war memorial
- Padmaja Naidu Zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
The story
You get up at four, drive in the dark, and stand in the cold with a hundred other people waiting for one thing. Then Kanchenjunga goes pink and everybody stops talking.
The rest is gentler: a toy train that has been climbing this hill since 1881, tea estates where you can taste a first flush next to a second and finally understand the difference, and a monastery above the clouds at Ghoom.
