Do Indians need a visa for New Zealand?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa for a holiday in New Zealand, and it must be granted before you fly. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) says that from 1 Oct 2026 applications for this visa must be made online, and it advises not booking non-refundable travel until the visa is approved.

To be granted a Visitor Visa you need:

  • a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand;
  • enough money for your stay (see the funds section below);
  • a ticket out of New Zealand, or the money to buy one on top of your living funds;
  • good health and good character;
  • a genuine plan to leave at the end of your visit.

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa. INZ says you may be able to keep working remotely for an employer or client outside New Zealand, which helps if you are travelling on leave and need to answer the odd email.

How much does the New Zealand visitor visa cost in rupees?

INZ's Fees Guide (INZ 1028, May 2026) puts Indian applicants in Band C. The total is the application fee, plus the immigration levy, plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) for each person in the application. Rupee figures below use the market rate of about ₹53.36 to the New Zealand dollar on 16 Oct 2026 (ExchangeRate-API); your card or bank rate will be slightly different.

LineNZDAbout in rupees
Visitor visa application fee (Band C)300₹16,000
Immigration levy, once per application41₹2,200
IVL, per person100₹5,300
One applicant applying from India441₹23,500
Couple on one application541₹28,900

The couple figure comes straight from INZ's worked example: an Indian citizen and their partner applying from India pay NZD 541, because the fee and immigration levy are paid once and the IVL twice. INZ charges in New Zealand dollars, so the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate.

What is the International Visitor Levy, and is it refunded?

The IVL, in full the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, is a charge of NZD 100 per person that funds conservation, tourism infrastructure and other tourism work in New Zealand. When you apply online, it is included in the same payment as the visa fee. Every family member included in an application pays it, unless they belong to an exempt group such as citizens of Pacific countries.

It is not refunded. INZ's Fees Guide says that if an application is declined, the fee and levies are not refunded. That is one more reason to apply only when your documents are complete, and to leave enough time before your flights.

How long does the visa take, and when should you apply?

INZ's current guide on its visitor visa page is that 80% of applications are decided within 2 weeks. It also says September to March is its busiest period and advises applying early over the New Zealand summer, especially for Christmas travel.

That busy period covers Diwali leave and the December school holidays, when many Indian families travel. Our trip pages suggest allowing 4 to 6 weeks before your flight for the visa, which leaves room for a slower decision or a request for one more document. We file the application for you once you confirm the trip.

How much money do you need to show?

INZ asks for at least NZD 1,000 a month for each month of your stay, about ₹53,400, or NZD 400 a month, about ₹21,300, if your accommodation is already paid for. On a package with prepaid hotels, the lower figure is the one that applies to you.

You also need a ticket out of New Zealand, or proof that you can buy one, and that money must be in addition to your living funds. Return flights booked as part of a package cover this.

How long can you stay on a visitor visa?

INZ gives two shapes of visitor visa:

  • Multiple entry: stays of up to 6 months in each 12-month period;
  • Single entry: up to 9 months in an 18-month period.

Overall, a visitor can spend no more than 9 months in New Zealand in any 18 months. Our New Zealand trips run 6 to 12 days, so the limit only matters if you add a long stay with relatives.

Can a couple or family apply together?

Yes. INZ lets you include your partner and dependent children aged 19 or younger in your application, or they can apply for their own visas. If they apply separately, INZ asks you to say so and include a letter with their details in your application.

On one application, the fee and immigration levy are paid once and the IVL is paid per person. On that rule, a couple with two children would pay NZD 741, about ₹39,500, if every member pays the IVL; check the INZ fee page for your family before you pay. Parents are not partners or dependent children, so elderly parents travelling with you make their own application; as a couple they can apply together, for NZD 541, about ₹28,900.
