Places to Visit in India with Elderly Parents: from ₹8,999

The places in India that are easiest with elderly parents are the ones with short walks, seated sightseeing and no high altitude: the Statue of Unity, Somnath and Dwarka, the Kerala backwaters and Kashmir in autumn are the gentlest on our list, and our trips run from ₹8,999 per person for a two-day Statue of Unity weekend from Ahmedabad to ₹34,999 per person for eight days in Rajasthan (prices checked 16 Oct 2026).

What is included depends on the trip: the Gujarat trips include AC road transport from Ahmedabad, breakfast and dinner; the Kerala, Darjeeling and Kashmir trips include return flights from Ahmedabad; the Mysore–Ooty loop starts in Bangalore by AC minibus. Every trip includes the stays and local transport. GST and TCS are shown in your written quote.

Prices checked 16 Oct 2026 from our live trip pages. Altitudes, temple timings and seasons checked with district and state tourism websites in October 2026, named below.

Why these four come first

The Statue of Unity, Somnath and Dwarka, and Kashmir trips are the three our pages mark "good" for seniors. The Kerala page marks its trip "possible", describing gentle days with one early start for the tea hills. Darjeeling comes last on walking alone: its own page says it is not an easy trip on weak knees.

How much walking does each trip involve?

Little walking

  • Statue of Unity: the 153-metre viewing gallery is reached by lift, and the Jungle Safari Park by vehicle. Walking between sights is short and mostly paved.
  • Kashmir: Mughal gardens at first light, an orchard lunch and shikara rides, with only short walks near the higher valleys.
  • Kerala: a night on a private houseboat with all meals, a canoe into the village lanes, and a spice garden visit.
  • Somnath and Dwarka: both temples are reached by short, mostly level walks. Two cautions: the 56 steps at the Dwarkadhish ghat, as our trip page gives them, and the barefoot stretch on hot stone. Gujarat Tourism describes the Dwarkadhish temple as reached by "50 plus steps".

More walking

  • Mysore–Ooty: the palace and Devaraja market on foot, a section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and no strenuous climbs.
  • Rajasthan: Amber Fort, the City Palace and Mehrangarh involve walking and stairs; the trip pages say modest dress and sun cover help.
  • Darjeeling: the sunrise trip to Tiger Hill is a cold pre-dawn drive, not a climb, but the town itself is mostly stairs.

Which places are at altitude, and who should check with a doctor first?

Four of these trips go into the hills. If a parent has a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, ask their doctor before you book, and mention the early starts and long drives too.

The Darjeeling page on our site also warns that Tiger Hill is cold before dawn even in summer, and that the 4 am start is hard on very young children. The Kerala trip page says Munnar mornings are cold enough for a light jacket. The Mysore–Ooty drive climbs a road of hairpin bends, which matters for anyone prone to motion sickness.

Gujarat Tourism lists the Statue of Unity as open from 8 am to 6 pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and the Somnath temple from 6:30 am to 9 pm (checked October 2026). Our Somnath and Dwarka page adds that Janmashtami turns Dwarka into a very large crowd, so tell us whether you want that or want to avoid it.

Which trips from Ahmedabad need the least travel time?

The two Gujarat trips are by road from your door, with no airport at all:

  • Statue of Unity: about four hours' drive each way, according to the trip itinerary; two days in all.
  • Somnath and Dwarka: Gujarat Tourism puts Somnath at around 410 km from Ahmedabad, so the first and last days are travel days.

For more short trips, see our weekend getaways from Ahmedabad and the Gujarat guide.

The Kerala (to Kochi), Darjeeling (to Bagdogra) and Kashmir (to Srinagar) trips include return flights from Ahmedabad. From Bagdogra, Darjeeling is 90 km by road (darjeeling.gov.in), a long climb at the end of a flight day. The Rajasthan trips say travel is by flight or AC transport, and your written quote says which. The Mysore–Ooty loop starts from Bangalore, so you reach Bangalore first.

How do you plan meals, medicines and rest days?

Meals

  • Somnath and Dwarka: all breakfasts and dinners, pure vegetarian. The whole circuit is vegetarian and dry.
  • Statue of Unity, Darjeeling and Kashmir: breakfast and dinner every day.
  • Kerala: all meals on the houseboat night, daily breakfast and two dinners.
  • Rajasthan and Mysore–Ooty: daily breakfast.

For Jain meals, tell us when you enquire so they are written into your quote. See the Kerala guide for food and stays in the backwaters.

Medicines

Pack regular medicines in hand luggage with a copy of the prescriptions, and carry a government photo ID for each parent; the Kashmir page says some zones need quick registrations. At Somnath and Dwarka phones are not allowed inside the temples, but there are free lockers at the gate.

Rest days

Choose trips that already have slack in them. The Darjeeling plan leaves the afternoon free after the sunrise start; the Royal Triangle has a free day in Udaipur; the Pushkar days are slower by design. On any trip, we can space the sightseeing out further in your quote.

What does each trip cost for two parents?

Multiply the per-person price by two. These totals are before GST and TCS.

TripFrom (two parents)
Statue of Unity & the Narmada, 2 days₹17,998
Mysore–Ooty Royal Loop, 4 days₹29,998
