The story

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

1. Stage 01 Arrive

   Fly into Srinagar in the narrow window, roughly late October into November, when the chinar trees turn. An hour on the water to Char Chinar, the island with four of them, is the right first move: it sets the palette for everything that follows.

2. Stage 02 Golden Gardens

   Nishat Bagh at first light, before the coaches and while the mist is still on the lake, which is the shot the whole trip is built around. The old city in the afternoon: Jamia Masjid with its deodar pillars, the shrines, and the bakeries that have been there for generations.

3. Stage 03 Saffron & Apples

   Pampore in the morning, where the saffron crocus flowers for about two weeks a year and whole families are out in the fields picking by hand. Each flower gives three threads, which explains the price better than any label. Lunch in an apple orchard afterwards, in season and heavy with fruit.

4. Stage 04 Pahalgam

   Across to Pahalgam through the willow groves. The Lidder valley in autumn is amber rather than green, and Betaab valley at the top of it is the place to spend the last hour of light with the river running through poplars that have all turned at once.

5. Stage 05 Slow Return

   A slow return along the edge of Dachigam, which is the last bastion of Kashmir's hangul deer and is worth the drive even without a permit for the interior. Back to the lake for a final kahwa, which is green tea with saffron, cardamom and almond, and is the correct drink for this weather.

6. Stage 06 The Return

   Fly home with a full memory card. Five nights timed to a fortnight that does not repeat, in a valley that spends the rest of the year being photographed in green by people who did not know about this.
