The story

Somnath has been destroyed and rebuilt six times and still stands directly above the sea — there is a pillar in the grounds claiming an unbroken line of ocean to Antarctica.

Dwarka is the other pole: Krishna's own city, a five-storey temple over the Gomti, and a short boat to Bet Dwarka where the sea goes turquoise and the gulls follow you the whole way.

  1. Drive down through Saurashtra. Evening aarti at Somnath, then the sound-and-light show on the temple wall.

  2. Morning darshan and the Bhalka Tirth site, then up the coast to Dwarka. Evening aarti at Dwarkadhish.

  3. Boat across to Bet Dwarka in the morning, Nageshwar and Rukmini temples on the way back, lighthouse for the sunset.

  4. Morning darshan if you want it, then the drive back to Ahmedabad.
