The story

KidZania is an indoor city built at a child's height inside the Dubai Mall, with streets, shops, a hospital, a fire station, a police station, a supermarket, a radio station and an aviation academy. Children walk in, pick a job, put on the uniform and do it: a short shift as a firefighter, a paramedic, a cashier, a vault guard, a radio jockey or a builder. Some jobs pay them in kidZos, the city's own currency, and others cost kidZos, such as the pilot trainee's cockpit, the climbing building or the salon. KidZania's own ticket site sells its child ticket for ages 4 to 16 and lists 50 kidZos on its standard tickets.

What it feels like: for the child it is the afternoon they are in charge. They join a short queue at the hospital or the police station, put on the uniform, do the job, and walk out with kidZos to spend on the next thing, perhaps the fire station, the climbing building or the pilot trainee's seat. For the parent it is quieter than you expect: children of 120 cm and taller may go round on their own inside, so many parents end up watching from the little streets while the older ones work, and the parents of toddlers stay close and help. Three or four hours pass quickly, and most children leave planning which job they will do next time.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and the family with teenagers at the younger end, because it is indoors, air-conditioned and built entirely around what the child wants to do on a hot afternoon; and the multigenerational family, where grandparents can come in with a grandchild while the others shop in the mall. It is not for couples or friends travelling without children: KidZania's own rules let adults and senior citizens in only when they are accompanying a child.

  3. Children choose their jobs from the city's establishments. Each activity is a session of its own, with a queue at busy times; paying jobs add kidZos, the others spend them. Toddlers stay with an adult throughout.

  4. Children leave with the adults they came with. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
