The story

La Perle is the resident show at Al Habtoor City in central Dubai, created by the artistic director Franco Dragone and performed in a theatre built for it. The stage is a pool. It floods with water and drains again in seconds while the cast work above, on and in it: aerial acrobats, divers dropping from 18 metres into the water, and scenes that move from dry stage to open water and back. The seating wraps round the stage in a 270-degree curve, so each section sees the action from a different angle.

What it feels like: the house lights go down, the music comes up, and before long somebody drops from high above the stage into the water. The first high dive draws a gasp from the whole theatre, and then another and another until the children stop gasping and start counting. The stage keeps changing under the performers, water appearing where people were just walking, and much of the evening is simply watching where the next thing will come from. It lasts about an hour and a half by La Perle's own description, and you come out into Al Habtoor City with the kind of quiet a good show leaves behind.

Who this suits: couples on an anniversary or honeymoon, for whom the show and a set dinner make a complete evening; the multigenerational family, because it is seated, indoors and needs no walking once you are in; the school-holiday family with children of 2 and over; and the luxury traveller, who will want the VIP-and-dinner option with La Perle's lounge and valet. It is a night out rather than a sightseeing stop: dress for the theatre, not the beach.
