Vegetarian Food in Thailand for Indians 2026: Jain Tips

Vegetarian Food in Thailand for Indians 2026: Jain Tips

Yes, vegetarian food is easy to get in Thailand once you know how to ask, because many dishes can be cooked without meat, and during the Vegetarian Festival, which runs from 10 to 18 Oct 2026, yellow-flag stalls serve food with no meat, seafood, dairy, garlic or onion. Jain meals take more care, and the four Thailand trips from Ahmedabad in this guide, from ₹36,999 to ₹56,999 per person with daily breakfast, plan every included meal around your diet (prices checked 16 Oct 2026).

Each trip price includes return flights from Ahmedabad, 4-star hotels on twin sharing with daily breakfast, transfers, the listed activities and a trip captain; the Islands & Street-Food Nights trip also includes four dinners. Lunches on free days are not included. GST and TCS are shown in your written quote.

Prices checked 16 Oct 2026 from our live trip pages. Festival dates and the yellow-flag custom checked with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (tatnews.org) in October 2026.

Is it easy to find vegetarian food in Thailand?

Mostly, yes, with one catch: "vegetable" on a Thai menu does not always mean vegetarian. Many Thai sauces and curry pastes are made with fish or shrimp, and egg turns up in fried rice and noodles. So the question is less where to eat and more what to say when you order.

Three things make it easier for Indian families:

  • Indian restaurants are easy to find in the main tourist areas of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, so you are never far from dal and roti if the children want something familiar.
  • Breakfast is included every day on our trips. Tell us your diet and we ask each hotel in advance what it can serve.
  • Cooking to order is common at stalls and small restaurants, so a cook can often leave something out if you ask clearly. That is why a few phrases matter.

What does the yellow "jay" sign mean on Thai food stalls?

It marks food for the Vegetarian Festival. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) describes yellow flags as "the tell-tale sign" of the festival's kin che, which it translates as "to eat clean", and food stalls marked with red and yellow flags carrying Chinese characters (tatnews.org, checked October 2026). You will see the same word written jay or jae in English.

According to TAT, people keeping the festival avoid meat, poultry, seafood and dairy, and pungent vegetables such as garlic and onions. That makes jay food close to what many Indian vegetarians and Jains eat, with differences worth knowing:

DietIs jay food a fit? What to check
VegetarianYes, though there is no paneer or curdEgg is not named in TAT's list, so ask
JainClose: no onion or garlicRoot vegetables such as potato and carrot, and mushrooms
VeganYes, by TAT's listEgg, as above

Outside the festival dates, don't rely on a flag alone. Ask.

How do you ask for no fish sauce, no egg, or no onion and garlic?

Save these lines on your phone and show the Thai script to the cook; English spellings vary.

You want to saySay it like thisShow this
I eat jay foodKin jayกินเจ
No meatMai sai neua satไม่ใส่เนื้อสัตว์
No fish sauceMai sai nam plaไม่ใส่น้ำปลา
No oyster sauceMai sai nam man hoiไม่ใส่น้ำมันหอย
No shrimp pasteMai sai kapiไม่ใส่กะปิ
No eggMai sai khaiไม่ใส่ไข่
No onion, no garlicMai sai hom, mai sai kratiamไม่ใส่หอม ไม่ใส่กระเทียม
  • Order dishes that are simple to change. Stir-fried vegetables, plain rice, sticky rice, fruit and fresh coconut are easy. Curries are harder, because the paste is often made in advance and may contain shrimp paste.
  • Ask about the stock. Soups and noodle broths are often made with meat or bones.
  • For Jain meals, write the list. No onion, garlic, potato, carrot, radish or mushroom is too much for one phrase. Your trip captain can write it in Thai for the kitchen.

Which places are easiest for vegetarian and Jain meals: Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket or Chiang Mai?

All four work, in different ways:

PlaceOur tripWhat helpsWhat to plan for
BangkokBangkok & Pattaya: City of Lights, from ₹36,999A big city with Indian restaurants; festival events on Yaowarat Road in Chinatown in 2025 (TAT)Long temple mornings; carry snacks and water
PattayaSame tripIndian restaurants in the tourist areaThe Coral Island day has a beach lunch; ask for veg in advance
Phuket and KrabiPhuket–Krabi Island Hopper, from ₹49,999Phuket Town hosts the festival processions (TAT)Boat-day lunches are set by the operator
Chiang MaiChiang Mai: Northern Soul, from ₹44,999A smaller city with a gentler paceThe sanctuary day is long; pack a lunch box if you are strict Jain

Bangkok and Pattaya make the easiest first trip for a family with strict vegetarian grandparents, because the drives are short and Indian food is close at hand. The islands need more planning, because lunches on boat days are cooked by the tour operator, not chosen from a menu. For a closer look at the Bangkok side, see our Thailand destination guide.

When is Thailand's Vegetarian Festival in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026 it runs from 10 to 18 Oct, according to TAT (tatnews.org, 6 Oct 2026). The festival is held at shrines across the country:

YearDatesWhere (TAT)
202610–18 Oct 2026Bangkok, Phuket, Nakhon Sawan, Mae Sot, Korat and Chumphon; Trang and Hat Yai with events between 8 and 19 Oct
2027Not yet announced by TAT (checked October 2026)Check before booking

In Bangkok, TAT lists the 2026 festival at the Tai Sia Huk Jow Shrine and the Sam Chin–Tri Mit Temple; in Phuket, at Chinese shrines across the island, with street processions from 11 to 18 Oct. TAT says the festival is observed from the first to the ninth night of the waxing moon by the Chinese calendar, so the dates move every year; its 2025 coverage places it in the ninth lunar month.

For a family, the festival is a good time to eat. For the processions, think about small children: TAT lists fire-walking among the rituals, and the streets fill with people. Participants wear white, so pack something white if you want to join in.

What should Jain travellers carry from India?

Carry enough to cover the meals you cannot control. On our trips that means lunches on boat days and long sightseeing days.

  • Dry snacks that keep: khakhra, mathri, roasted chana, makhana, dry fruit and biscuits.
  • Theplas for the first day or two, packed flat in a box.
  • A written card in English listing what you don't eat, which your trip captain can turn into Thai.

Check your airline's baggage rules for food, and Thailand's customs rules for anything fresh, before packing. If you keep chauvihar and eat before sunset, tell us: we time the day so dinner comes early.

How do our Thailand trips handle vegetarian meals?

We ask about food at the first message, then pass it on to every hotel and tour in your plan. Your trip captain checks each included meal with the kitchen or operator before you pay. These are the meals each trip includes:
