The story

Xclusive Yachts runs shared sailings on the Stardom, a 141-foot superyacht with three decks, from Dubai Harbour. You buy a place on board rather than the whole boat, and choose one of three sailings: a brunch cruise from 1 to 4 pm, a sundowner from 5 to 8 pm, and a nightfall cruise from 9 pm to midnight that is strictly for guests aged 21 and over. The route runs along the coast past Dubai Harbour and JBR, Ain Dubai, Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis, weather and sea permitting. A live barbecue and pasta station feeds everyone, the menu has vegetarian options, and soft drinks are included.

What it feels like: you take your shoes off at the gangway, which sets the tone, and find a spot on one of the three decks. The boat pulls out of the harbour and the city lines up along the rail, the JBR towers, the great wheel of Ain Dubai, then the long curve of the Palm with Atlantis at its tip. On the brunch sailing the sea is bright and there may be a chance to swim; the sundowner is the one for photographs, as the light goes gold and then the towers switch on; the nightfall sailing is the city lit up from the water, adults only. The food comes off the grill while you watch, and three hours goes faster than you expect.

Who this suits: the couple's escape and honeymooners, above all on the sundowner; the friends group and the bachelor or bachelorette trip, who will want the 21+ nightfall sailing; and the luxury traveller who wants a superyacht deck without chartering one. A school-holiday family can bring children on the brunch or sundowner sailings, and vegetarian families will find vegetarian dishes at the grill; Jain meals are not mentioned, so ask your captain.
