The story

This is the Dubai coastline from the deck of a yacht, without chartering the whole boat. Sky Walker runs shared yachts out of Dubai Harbour: you book seats, not the vessel, and share the deck with other small groups. The shorter cruises run out past Dubai Marina and the Ain Dubai wheel, along the Palm Jumeirah and across to the Burj Al Arab; the three-hour ones go further round the Palm and Bluewaters. Every option has food on board, from breakfast on the morning cruise to a barbecue on the lunch, sunset and night cruises, and the operator's own menu for the two-hour cruises carries a veg burger alongside the chicken and beef.

What it feels like: you leave your shoes at the gangway, because no footwear is allowed on deck, and find a seat on deck as the yacht slides out of the harbour. It is slow and quiet after the city. On the sunset cruises the towers turn gold and then pink behind you and the Burj Al Arab turns to a silhouette against the sky; on the night-lights cruise the whole coast is lit, the Marina towers reflected in black water, and the breeze is the coolest you will feel all day. The ride-and-slide day is different: the yacht anchors off JBR beach, an inflatable slide goes over the side, and the afternoon is swimming, snorkelling and lying about on floating loungers.

Who this suits: the multigenerational family and active seniors, who get the sea and the skyline sitting down with food on hand; couples and honeymooners, for whom the sunset and night cruises are the obvious choice; and the friends group, who will want the ride-and-slide day or the sundowner. Families with young children are welcome; children under 12 must wear a life vest throughout, by the operator's rule. Note for families who do not drink: the operator's pages list bar drinks on the ride-and-slide day and an open bar with cocktails on the sundowner, alongside juices and soft drinks; the lunch cruise page says alcohol is not included.

What happens on board

Boarding time and point are confirmed for your date.

  1. Make your own way to the Dubai Harbour Yacht Club, near the Lamo restaurant opposite Gate 7-BA, as the operator gives the meeting point; none of these options includes a hotel transfer. Arrive 30 minutes before departure: the operator says the yacht leaves on time.

  2. Show your voucher and ID, leave your shoes at the gangway and take a seat on deck.

  3. Out of the harbour past Dubai Marina and Ain Dubai, along the Palm Jumeirah and across to the Burj Al Arab on the two-hour cruises; the three-hour cruises add more of the Palm, Bluewaters and the coast by the royal palaces. The ride-and-slide yacht sails through Dubai Marina and anchors off JBR beach for swimming and the slide. The sea decides the exact route on the day.

  4. Breakfast on the morning cruise; a barbecue on the lunch, sunset and night cruises; a barbecue lunch on the ride-and-slide day; barbecue skewers and fruit on the sundowner.

  5. The yacht returns to Dubai Harbour, where the cruise ends.
