The story

The Edge Walk is the outdoor part of Sky Views, the observatory at the top of Address Sky View in Downtown Dubai. By the venue's own description it is a full circle on a ledge around the top of the tower's main pod, more than 219.5 metres above the ground, walked hands-free on the outside of the building with no window or barrier between you and the view. You wear the Edge Walk overall the venue provides, which it says is compulsory, and the venue puts the whole experience at about an hour and a half, including the preparation before you step out.

What it feels like: the preparation is the slow part, with the rules, the overall and the waiting, and your stomach has time to tighten. Then you step out into open air, and the city is not behind glass any more. The first steps along the ledge are the hard ones. After that you start to look up rather than down: the Burj Khalifa across Downtown, the traffic moving silently far below, the coast in the haze. The moment worth the money is halfway round, when you realise you have stopped holding your breath. You come back inside with shaking knees and the story from the whole Dubai trip that people will ask about.

Who this suits: the adventure-led traveller and the friends group, for whom this is the story of the trip; the bachelor or bachelorette group; honeymooners and couples who want to do one frightening thing together; and solo travellers, since it is booked per person. What happens
