The story
This is one the operator ticket for two separate places. The Dubai Frame stands at Gate 4 of Zabeel Park: two towers 150 metres high and 95 metres wide, joined across the top by a bridge. You start in the Old Dubai gallery at the base, ride the lift 48 floors in 75 seconds to the sky deck, and walk the bridge, with old Dubai to the north and the new city to the south and a luminous glass walkway underfoot; the Future Dubai gallery is on the way down. Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is on the ground level of Dubai Mall. Its tank holds ten million litres and more than 140 species, including over 300 sharks and rays, and a 48-metre tunnel takes you through it with a 270-degree view, and the Underwater Zoo and Penguin Cove, home to 16 gentoo penguins, complete the visit. The operator sells the pair without a transfer, so you travel between them on your own: the Frame is near Al Jafiliya metro station, and Dubai Mall is a taxi ride away.
What it feels like: the two halves of the day are opposites. At the Frame you are high up in the light, stepping onto glass with the city laid out on both sides, old Dubai one way and the new towers the other. At the aquarium you are in blue half-light, with sharks and rays gliding over the tunnel roof and the children pressing their noses to the glass. The Frame in the cooler morning, from 8 am, then the aquarium in the heat of the afternoon, is the easy way to do it.
Who this suits: families with children of any age, since both visits are short and out of the sun, though prams are left at the counter at both; multigenerational families and seniors, since a lift takes you to the Frame's sky deck and the aquarium is inside the mall; and couples on a first visit who want two sights that explain the city without a long day. Anyone who dislikes heights may find the glass walkway on the bridge hard going.
