The story

The Butterfly Garden sits next door to the Miracle Garden on the desert side of Al Barsha, and it is the smaller, quieter and year-round one of the pair. Ten domes are joined in a ring, each kept at the warmth the butterflies need, and inside them more than 15,000 butterflies of over 50 species fly loose among the plants. You walk the ring at your own pace; there is no route to keep to and no time limit, and the garden itself suggests two to three hours if you take in the museum and the shops as well.

The first minute is the one people talk about afterwards: you step into the first dome, the air changes, and something lands on your sleeve. Children go still for the first time all day. A patient adult with a phone can get a close photograph without touching anything, which is the one rule that matters here. The museum at the end shows the life cycle from egg to butterfly and has specimens arranged into artwork, and there is a small cinema for children who have run out of patience before their parents have.

Who it suits: families with small children (under-3s enter free at the gate, prams roll through, and it is one of the few Dubai attractions where a toddler is happy for an hour), seniors (flat, wheelchair-friendly throughout, and enclosed), and couples who want an hour away from malls and towers. It is a modest ticket that pairs with the Miracle Garden next door, which is a separate ticket and does not run all year, so ask your captain whether it is open on your dates.

What your ticket covers

Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.

  1. Ticket-only guests reach the garden themselves: it is in Al Barsha South 3, next to the Dubai Miracle Garden, on the desert side of the city. On the private option a vehicle collects you from your hotel.

  2. Walk the ring of ten domes at your own pace. Butterflies land on visitors; let them, and do not touch the wings.

  3. The butterfly museum and the life-cycle display, the children's cinema, then the cafe and the souvenir shops.

  4. About two to three hours in all. On the private option, drop back at your hotel.
