The story

Before the towers, there was the Creek. The saltwater inlet that runs through the oldest part of Dubai is still lined with wooden cargo dhows unloading onto the Deira quay, and the little abra ferries still cross it for a dirham. The dinner cruise boards on the Creek in the evening and moves slowly between the two banks for about two hours: the lantern-lit heritage waterfront of Al Seef on one side, the gold souk and the old customs houses on the other, and the reflections of it all on flat black water.

It is quieter and cheaper than the Marina cruise and the scale is human: three-storey buildings, wind towers, minarets, the occasional abra crossing your bow. Dinner is a buffet with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, with tea, coffee and water, and there is usually a tanoura dance, the whirling skirt lit from within. The lower deck is enclosed and air-conditioned; the upper deck is open to the night air, and in winter it is the better seat.

Who it suits: seniors, who get a Dubai evening with no walking and a seat the whole way; families, because it is short and there is space for children to move; and couples who want something older than the skyline.
