The story

Deep Dive Dubai is an indoor diving pool at Nad Al Sheba 1, about 20 minutes from Downtown Dubai. It holds 14 million litres of fresh water kept at about 30 degrees all year, and at its deepest it goes down 60 metres. The floor of the pool is built as an abandoned city, a nod to the UAE's pearl-diving past: a street with an apartment, a garage with cars and arcade games, a library, a chess board, a foosball table, a motorcycle and more, spread across different depths. All the equipment, including a wetsuit, is part of the ticket. The operator sells five experiences: surface snorkelling from age 6; the Sunken City Walk, a guided walk along a 4-metre pavement in a full-face mask for which you need not swim; Discover Scuba for people who have never dived, from age 10, down to 12 metres with an instructor; and guided dives for certified divers, to 12, 18 or 30 metres depending on certification. The two scuba experiences come in standard, premium and platinum tiers. Each experience is sold ticket only, or with a private transfer from your hotel.

What it feels like: you come in from the heat to a quiet, blue-lit hall and a pool so clear that the city at the bottom looks close enough to touch. After the briefing and the kitting up, the first minutes are about breathing slowly and clearing your ears; then the instructor leads you down past windows and rooftops, and the odd, dreamlike part begins, sitting at a chess board or beside a parked car while bubbles rise past you. Snorkellers float over the same streets from above. Family members who are not getting wet can watch through the large windows, or from the cafe on the B2 level, which looks straight into the sunken city.

Who this suits: the adventure traveller and the friends group, for whom a first scuba dive in warm, calm, clear water is the draw; couples, above all on the private platinum tier; families with children aged 10 and over for scuba, or from 6 for snorkelling; and certified divers who want a dive unlike any at sea. A multigenerational family can come together and split up: grandparents watch from the windows and the cafe while the younger ones go in. Everyone taking part fills in the centre's medical questionnaire first.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. On the private-transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel and brings you to Deep Dive Dubai at Nad Al Sheba 1. On the ticket-only options you make your own way; the centre itself provides no transport, and a taxi or ride-hailing app is the usual way. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your slot for check-in.

  2. Show your voucher, complete the medical questionnaire and change in the dressing rooms, which have towels and toiletries. Your instructor or guide briefs you and fits your equipment.

  3. Snorkelling lasts about an hour on the surface. The Sunken City Walk is about an hour with some 20 minutes under water. Discover Scuba starts with a short introduction and practice in shallow water before the dive to 12 metres. Certified divers dive to the depth their certification allows. The operator plans two to three hours in all from check-in, depending on the package; the platinum tier is about three hours.

  4. Shower and change; the cafe on the B2 level serves juices, coffee and snacks with a view into the pool. On the private-transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.

Know before you go

  • Minimum ages, by the operator: snorkelling 6, the Sunken City Walk 10, scuba diving 10. A parent or guardian must be present and give written consent for a minor taking part.
  • Scuba divers must be able to swim; the Sunken City Walk needs no swimming skills. Weaker swimmers do better on snorkelling, which uses surface flotation.
  • Everyone fills in the centre's medical questionnaire. A 'yes' to any question means a doctor's letter saying you are fit to dive, so check it at home before you travel, not on the day.
  • Do not fly, or go up above 300 metres (the Burj Khalifa's upper decks, for example), for 12 hours after a dive, by the centre's own advice. Plan the dive for the start of the trip, not the last morning.
  • Bring a swimsuit and slippers; everything else is provided. The water is about 30 degrees all year.
  • First-time divers cannot hold a camera under water, by dive-training rules; certified divers may bring a GoPro. Video comes with the premium and platinum tiers or as an upgrade.
  • Non-divers can watch through the windows and from the cafe, so a family can come together.
  • The operator gives 2 hours for every ticket-only option and 3 hours with private transfer. The operator gives about one hour for snorkelling and for the Sunken City Walk, and two to three hours for scuba from check-in; your captain confirms timings.
  • Private-transfer prices: the operator does not say whether they are per person or per vehicle. They are shown per person until the operator confirms; your captain confirms in writing before you pay.
  • The premium and platinum inclusions are the operator's own package lists; your the operator voucher states what your ticket includes, and your captain shares it before you pay.
  • The operator carries one rate per option and no child rate. Your captain asks the operator about child prices before you pay.
  • Availability is confirmed by the operator only when your captain books. The centre warns that slots are limited, and the operator can decline a booking if the price has changed or the slot is full; you are told before you pay.
  • Prices are per person in INR. GST and TCS on international bookings are shown in your written quote.
