The story

AYA Universe is an indoor attraction on Level One of Wafi City, the mall on Oud Metha Road. It is a sequence of rooms built around glowing light and sound, which Wafi City's own page describes as twelve immersive worlds and a journey of about 90 minutes. The rooms it names include Flora, a glowing forest where the seasons change around you; Luna, a room of endless mirrors filled with glowing moons; Celestia, a pit of glowing balls to wade into; The Source, pools of light that react to music; and The Falls, a real waterfall that appears to flow upside down.

What it feels like: you walk from the bright mall into the first room and your eyes take a moment to adjust, and then the colours start. Each room asks something slightly different of you: stand still in the mirrors, wade through the ball pit, watch the water rise. Children treat it as a playground; teenagers and couples spend half of it taking photographs; grandparents usually enjoy the calmer rooms and sit out the ball pit. It is a good ninety minutes on a hot afternoon or an evening when the desert or the beach is too much.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and the family with teenagers, because it is indoors, short and hands-on; the couple's escape and honeymooners, for the photographs; and the friends group or ladies-only group on a relaxed evening in the city. Children under 3 go free on AYA's own ticket.

  1. Ticket-only guests make their own way to Wafi City on Oud Metha Road; AYA Universe is on Level One, in the main atrium. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel; the shared vehicle collects other guests on the way.

  2. Show your voucher at the AYA entrance and walk the rooms at your own pace; allow about 90 minutes.

  3. Leave into the mall when you are done. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
