The story

The aquarium sits inside Atlantis, The Palm, the resort at the far end of the Palm Jumeirah. The operator calls it the Lost Chambers Aquarium; Atlantis's own pages now present it as the Lost World Aquarium, part of Aquaventure World, and describe it as 21 marine exhibits holding more than 65,000 marine animals of over 250 species. The walk takes you through a maze of passages and tunnels built to look like the ruins of the lost city of Atlantis, with the water on both sides of you and, in places, above.

What it feels like: you step out of the bright resort into cool corridors lit blue by the tanks. Rays glide past the glass close enough to see their undersides, sharks turn slowly in the big windows, and whole shoals move together and change direction at once. Children press their faces to the low windows and run ahead to the next chamber; grandparents take it at their own pace, because it is indoors and never hurried. Most families spend a couple of hours and come out blinking into the lobby with far more photographs than they expected to take.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and the family with toddlers, since it is indoors, cool and easy to leave when small legs tire; the multigenerational group and active seniors, for the same reasons; and the couple's escape, who can pair it with an evening on the Palm. If you are also going to Aquaventure, check with your captain first: some Aquaventure passes include the aquarium, so you may not need both.
