The story

Dolphin Bay is the dolphin lagoon at Aquaventure, the water park of Atlantis The Palm on Crescent Road, Palm Jumeirah, and Atlantis runs its dolphin and sea lion programmes there from Atlas Village. The operator sells eleven of Atlantis's own marine programmes under the one name. Two keep you dry: the Dolphin Meet and Greet and the Sea Lion Meet and Greet, both at the poolside. Two keep you on the surface of the lagoon: the Dolphin Kayak and the Dolphin Paddle. Two put you in the water with the dolphins: the Dolphin Encounter, thirty minutes standing waist-deep, and the Dolphin Swim, fifteen minutes of preparation and thirty in the water. The other five take place in Atlantis's shark and aquarium lagoons rather than in Dolphin Bay itself: a Shark Snorkel on the surface of the Shark Lagoon at Neptune Tower; the Ultimate Snorkel in the Ambassador Lagoon; Aquatrek Extreme, a walk along the Ambassador Lagoon floor ten metres down in a diving helmet, with no training or certificate needed; and two scuba dives in the same lagoon, the Discovery Dive for beginners with an instructor and the Explorer Dive for certified divers. Each comes as a ticket only or with a private transfer from your hotel, and all but the kayak and paddle with a shared transfer too.

What it feels like: you come in through the water park, change, lock your things away and are walked to the water by the Atlantis team. On a Meet and Greet the dolphin or sea lion comes to the edge of the pool, close enough to look you in the eye, while the team tells you about the animal in front of you, and there is a printed photograph to take home. On the Encounter you stand in the lagoon up to your waist and the dolphins are beside you; on the Swim you are out in deeper water with them. From a kayak you sit low on the lagoon and the dolphins may come right up to the side of the boat. In the Ambassador Lagoon it is a different world: face-down on a snorkel you float over shoals, rays and sharks among carved ruins, and on the Aquatrek or a dive you are down among them, with nothing to hear but your own breathing. The time with the animals is short, about twenty to forty-five minutes depending on the programme, so it is worth being unhurried about the rest of the visit.

Who this suits: the family with teenagers, who can pick by age and nerve: the Dolphin Swim from 8, a scuba dive from 10, Aquatrek Extreme from 12. The school-holiday family with younger children does better on a Meet and Greet or the Encounter, which Atlantis lists for all ages and for non-swimmers, with a paying adult alongside the under-12s. A multigenerational family can split: grandparents take the dry, poolside Meet and Greet while the children are in the water. Couples and friends groups who swim well will want the Dolphin Swim or a dive, and certified divers have the Explorer Dive.

What your ticket covers

Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.

  1. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel and drives you to Atlantis The Palm on Crescent Road, Palm Jumeirah; the shared vehicle may collect other guests on the way. On the ticket-only options you make your own way there.

  2. Show your voucher and a passport or government photo ID, which Atlantis's listing asks for at admission. Change into swimwear, put your things in a locker, and collect the equipment your programme uses: a life jacket, wetsuit, mask and snorkel, diving helmet or scuba set.

  3. The in-water programmes start with a briefing from the Atlantis team: about 10 minutes before the kayak, 15 before the Dolphin Swim, and 15 to 20 before the Ultimate Snorkel and the dives, by Atlantis's listings.

  4. The programme you booked: a poolside Meet and Greet with a dolphin or a sea lion; 30 minutes waist-deep on the Dolphin Encounter; 30 minutes swimming on the Dolphin Swim; about 20 minutes on the water on the kayak; 20 minutes on the surface of the Shark Lagoon; or 20 to 30 minutes in the Ambassador Lagoon on the Ultimate Snorkel or a dive. Aquatrek Extreme takes about 30 minutes in all, briefing and changing included.

  5. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel; your captain confirms pickup and return times. The operator gives 2 hours for ticket only, 6 hours with a shared transfer and 4 hours with a private transfer.
