The story

Aquaventure is the water park at Atlantis, at the far end of Palm Jumeirah. By Atlantis's own pages it opens from 10 am to 6 pm, it is built around three big slide towers, among them the Trident Tower, and beyond them lies a whole area for children: Splashers Island, Splashers Cove, Splashers Lagoon and Splashers Mountain, with small slides, splash pads and shallow pools meant mainly for children under 1.2 m. A day's access includes a beach. This listing is the operator's 'All Days' day pass, which we read as valid whichever day of the week you go.

What it feels like: it is a full day in the water and the sun, from opening to closing if the children have their way. The towers are what the teenagers came for, a climb up the tower and then a few seconds of pure speed before the splash at the bottom. Younger children disappear into the Splashers zones and are happy for hours in the splash pads and shallow pools. Parents and grandparents tend to find a lounger in the shade, take turns with the children, and walk down to the beach when the slides get too much. You leave sunburnt at the edges, waterlogged and very hungry.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and the family with teenagers first, since it has something at every height; the family with toddlers, who have their own zones; and friends groups who want the big slides. Grandparents who do not swim can still enjoy a day by the water, but it is a long, hot, wet day with a lot of walking between towers, so plan it with breaks. If you also want the aquarium at Atlantis, ask your captain about the pass that adds it rather than buying this one.

  1. On the ticket-only option, make your own way to Atlantis on Palm Jumeirah. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel; the shared vehicle collects other guests on its route. Aim to arrive near the 10 am opening.

  2. Show your voucher at the entrance. Children under 1.2 m head for the Splashers zones; taller riders for the towers. Break for lunch, and cool off on the beach in the afternoon.

  3. The park closes at 6 pm. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel; your captain confirms the return time.
