The story

ARTE Museum Dubai is an indoor exhibition of digital art on Level 2 of The Dubai Mall, opposite Galeries Lafayette. Instead of frames on walls, each room is a projected world with its own soundtrack and, by the museum's own description, its own fragrance. The rooms named on its site include Flower, Whale, Wormhole, Forest, Aurora Beach, Waterfall Infinite, a Garden series that includes Life of UAE and work made with the Musée d'Orsay that reimagines paintings by Monet and Van Gogh, and two rooms called Live Sketchbook Coral Reef and Live Canvas Desert. The museum puts the average visit at about 90 minutes.

What it feels like: you step out of the mall's shopfronts into dim rooms where the art moves around you. A waterfall pours down the walls, a room fills with flowers, a whale swims across the projections, and the music and scent change as you cross from one room to the next. Children run into the middle of the projections to be part of the picture; parents reach for their phones. It is the calm, cool counterweight to a busy Downtown day, and it is indoors, so the time of year does not matter.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and teenagers, because it is visual, photogenic and done in an hour and a half; the multigenerational group, since it is indoors, air-conditioned and in the same mall as everything else on a Downtown day; couples on an anniversary or honeymoon trip who want an easy evening before dinner; and the photography cohort. Anyone who wants old masters on real canvas will not find them here: this is projected light.
