Things to Do in Bali: The Honest 2026 Guide

Bali gets a bad rap from people who only saw the traffic and the beach clubs. Do it right and it's one of the most rewarding islands on earth. Here's what actually earns your time.

Start in Ubud, not the beaches

Ubud is Bali's green, slow heart. Base here for the first half.

  • Tegallalang rice terraces at sunrise — go before 8am or fight the crowds. The light through the mist is the whole point.
  • Tirta Empul water temple — join the purification ritual, don't just photograph it. It's genuinely moving.
  • The waterfall circuit — Tibumana, Tukad Cepung and Kanto Lampo in one day. Bring a dry bag.
The mistake most people make: staying only in Canggu or Kuta and calling that "Bali". You didn't see the island; you saw a beach with a wifi password.

Then flip to Uluwatu

The south is dramatic cliffs and the best sunsets in Indonesia.

  • Uluwatu Temple + Kecak fire dance at sunset — the timing is deliberate; the sun drops as the chant peaks.
  • A cliff-edge dinner — a table on the edge with the ocean 70 metres below.

What to skip

  • Overpriced "Instagram swings" that are a queue and a fee.
  • Any tour that promises "see all of Bali in one day". You can't. Don't.

When to go

April–June and September–October: dry, green, and before peak crowds. Read our visa guide for Indonesia before you book.
