Adding the Sigiriya climb and the Ella blue train costs ₹3,499 and ₹2,999 per person if your trip does not already include them, and the tourist ETA is now free for Indians.

How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost from India?
Here are our five planned Sri Lanka trips, shortest first. Prices are per person, as listed on 16 Oct 2026.
| Our trip | Length | From (per person) | What the days look like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka Quick Weekender | 4 days, 3 nights | ₹38,999 | Colombo street food, Galle Fort ramparts at sunset, an Unawatuna beach day |
| Sri Lanka Wildlife Safari | 5 days, 4 nights | ₹52,999 | Udawalawe elephant herds, Yala game drives at dawn and dusk |
| Sri Lanka Beaches & Whales | 6 days, 5 nights | ₹57,999 | Bentota, the Madu river mangroves, Mirissa and a whale-watching morning |
| Sri Lanka Tea Trails | 6 days, 5 nights | ₹59,999 | Nuwara Eliya, a tea factory tasting, Horton Plains at dawn, Ella |
| Sri Lanka Highlights Loop | 7 days, 6 nights | ₹64,999 | Sigiriya, Kandy, the blue train to Ella, Galle Fort |
The Weekender is built for a long weekend: land in Colombo, drive about two hours down the coast to Galle, spend a slow day at Unawatuna and fly home. With a Friday departure and a Monday return it needs two days of leave, or one if a holiday falls on the Friday.
What do the 4- to 7-day Sri Lanka trips include?
Each trip page lists the same core inclusions:
- Return flights from Ahmedabad, with departures from other metro cities on request
- Hand-picked stays with daily breakfast
- All transfers and the experiences listed on the trip page
- The Sri Lanka ETA, filed by us with your passport details
- A trip captain and local crew
- Reserved seats on the hill-country train where the itinerary uses it, as on the Highlights Loop and Tea Trails
Not included: meals that are not listed, optional add-ons, personal shopping and tips, and travel insurance. None of the five trips has fixed departure dates. They run as private trips, so the price for your dates is confirmed in the written quote.
How much do Sigiriya and the Ella train add?
The Highlights Loop already includes both: the Sigiriya climb on day 2 and the blue train to Ella on day 4. On the other trips, or if you plan Sri Lanka yourself, these are our half-day prices on 16 Oct 2026.
| Add-on | Length | From (per person) | What is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sigiriya: The Lion Rock at First Light | 5 hours | ₹3,499 | Transfers from Sigiriya or Dambulla hotels, the site entry ticket, a licensed guide, water and a fruit breakfast |
| Ella: The Blue Train to Nine Arch | Half day | ₹2,999 | A reserved train ticket, a guide for the walk to Nine Arch Bridge, a tea factory tour and tasting |
Both together come to ₹6,498 per person, or ₹12,996 for a couple. Sigiriya and Ella are a long way from the south coast, so they don't fit well onto the 4-day Weekender; if you want both, the Highlights Loop is simpler.
The Sigiriya ticket for Indians
Sigiriya tickets are issued by the Central Cultural Fund. Its e-ticketing page (eservices.ccf.gov.lk, checked October 2026) says tourists from SAARC countries, which include India, get a lower relief ticket on showing a valid passport at the counter. The page does not print the amount, so check before booking if you are going on your own. Our Sigiriya morning includes the ticket.
Sigiriya is about 1,200 uneven steps, with open metal staircases on the rock face, so it is not for weak knees or a fear of heights; elderly parents may prefer to wait at the water gardens at the base. The Ella train is scenic rather than fast and often runs late, so don't plan a flight for the same afternoon. The walk to Nine Arch follows a working railway line, which is why a guide walks with you.
Do Indians pay for the Sri Lanka ETA now?
No. From 25 May 2026, Indians are one of 40 nationalities who get the tourist ETA free of charge, valid for 30 days, with a double entry allowed within that period (eta.gov.lk, checked October 2026). Free does not mean optional: every visitor still needs an approved ETA before arrival.
- Apply only on eta.gov.lk, the official site of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
- At the airport, carry a passport valid for six months from arrival, a confirmed return ticket, proof of enough funds and a copy of the ETA approval.
- Stays beyond 30 days need a paid extension, applied for after you arrive.
- ETA fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.
When is whale season, and when is it rainy?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that reach different coasts, so there is no single wet month for the whole island. The Department of Census and Statistics sets out four seasons in its Statistical Abstract 2024 (statistics.gov.lk, checked October 2026):
| Period | Months | Where the rain falls |
|---|---|---|
| South-west monsoon | May to September | Mostly the south-western parts of the island |
| Inter-monsoon | October to November | Afternoon or evening showers anywhere, often widespread |
| North-east monsoon | December to February | Mainly the eastern half of the island |
| Inter-monsoon | March to April | Afternoon or evening showers anywhere |
So for Galle, Bentota and Mirissa on the south-west coast, December to April falls outside the south-west monsoon. Those are also whale months on the south coast: the Sri Lanka Navy's whale-watching page (whalewatching.navy.lk, checked October 2026) lists its cruises from Galle from November to April, and from Trincomalee in the east from May to October.
Our Beaches & Whales trip is planned for the south-coast season and sails from Mirissa before dawn. Sightings are good but never promised, and the boat can pitch on open swell, so it suits older children better than toddlers.
Is Sri Lanka easy for vegetarian and Jain travellers?
Vegetarian food is easy to find. Rice and curry, the everyday meal, usually comes with several vegetable curries and dal, and every trip includes breakfast at the hotel. Lunches and dinners are not included unless listed, so you choose where and what to eat.
Jain food takes more planning, since many curries start with onion and garlic, and root vegetables such as potato turn up often. Tell us when you enquire: your trip captain checks meals with each hotel before you travel. On long road and train days, carry some ready-to-eat food from home.
For elderly parents, the Weekender is the gentlest trip, with mostly easy walking on city streets, the fort ramparts and the beach. The Wildlife Safari means bumpy open jeeps and very early starts, and the Tea Trails trip includes the Horton Plains loop, roughly 9 km over uneven ground.
What does a couple or a family of four pay?
Multiply the per-person price by the number of travellers. Children's prices depend on age and on whether they need their own bed, so we price them in your quote. These totals are before GST and TCS.
| Trip | Couple | Four people |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Weekender, 4 days | ₹77,998 | ₹1,55,996 |
| Wildlife Safari, 5 days | ₹1,05,998 | ₹2,11,996 |
| Beaches & Whales, 6 days | ₹1,15,998 | ₹2,31,996 |
| Tea Trails, 6 days | ₹1,19,998 | ₹2,39,996 |
| Highlights Loop, 7 days | ₹1,29,998 | ₹2,59,996 |

Is Sigiriya included in Sri Lanka tour packages? On our trips, the 7-day Highlights Loop includes the Sigiriya climb and the blue train to Ella. On the others you can add the Sigiriya morning for ₹3,499 per person, with the entry ticket, and the Ella train half day for ₹2,999.
Is Sri Lanka good for a trip with elderly parents? Yes, if you choose the pace. The 4-day Weekender has gentle walking around Colombo, Galle Fort and the beach. Sigiriya's 1,200 steps and the roughly 9 km Horton Plains walk are better skipped by anyone with weak knees.
