The story

Small island, huge variety. Climb Sigiriya's ancient rock citadel, ride the world-famous blue train through tea country to Ella, hear evening drums at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, and finish on Galle's rampart walls as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Land at Colombo and drive north to the cultural triangle, around four hours. The point of moving straight on is tomorrow: Sigiriya is a dawn climb and being nearby the night before is what makes that comfortable rather than brutal. An early dinner and an early night.

  2. Up Sigiriya at first light. It is a two-hundred-metre granite plug with a fifth-century palace on the summit, reached by stairways bolted to the rock face, past the frescoes and the lion's paws. Hundreds of steps and completely worth it. A village safari in the afternoon, by bullock cart and catamaran.

  3. South to Kandy through the hills. The Temple of the Tooth holds what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha and is the most important Buddhist site in the country; the evening puja, with drums, is the time to be there. A tea museum on the way in, and the lake walk after.

  4. The blue train to Ella, which is regularly called one of the great rail journeys and is not an exaggeration. Six or seven hours through tea estates with the doors open and your legs out of them if you are brave. It stops at Nine Arch Bridge country, which is the photograph everyone has seen.

  5. Little Adam's Peak in the morning, which is a gentle forty-minute climb to a ridge with the whole valley below and, unlike its bigger namesake, no thousands of steps. Ravana Falls in the afternoon, and a walk to Nine Arch Bridge to see a train actually cross it.

  6. Down to the south coast and Galle, a fort town the Dutch rebuilt in stone, of ramparts, churches and shuttered shophouses now full of cafes. Walk the walls at sunset, which is when the whole town comes out to do the same thing, and eat seafood by the water afterwards.

  7. Up the coast road to Colombo and the flight home. Seven days, one island small enough to cross in a week and varied enough that the tea country and the beach feel like separate countries.
