The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Arrival
Land at Colombo and drive north to the cultural triangle, around four hours. The point of moving straight on is tomorrow: Sigiriya is a dawn climb and being nearby the night before is what makes that comfortable rather than brutal. An early dinner and an early night.
- Stage 02
Sigiriya
Up Sigiriya at first light. It is a two-hundred-metre granite plug with a fifth-century palace on the summit, reached by stairways bolted to the rock face, past the frescoes and the lion's paws. Hundreds of steps and completely worth it. A village safari in the afternoon, by bullock cart and catamaran.
- Stage 03
Kandy
South to Kandy through the hills. The Temple of the Tooth holds what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha and is the most important Buddhist site in the country; the evening puja, with drums, is the time to be there. A tea museum on the way in, and the lake walk after.
- Stage 04
The Blue Train
The blue train to Ella, which is regularly called one of the great rail journeys and is not an exaggeration. Six or seven hours through tea estates with the doors open and your legs out of them if you are brave. It stops at Nine Arch Bridge country, which is the photograph everyone has seen.
- Stage 05
Ella
Little Adam's Peak in the morning, which is a gentle forty-minute climb to a ridge with the whole valley below and, unlike its bigger namesake, no thousands of steps. Ravana Falls in the afternoon, and a walk to Nine Arch Bridge to see a train actually cross it.
- Stage 06
Galle
Down to the south coast and Galle, a fort town the Dutch rebuilt in stone, of ramparts, churches and shuttered shophouses now full of cafes. Walk the walls at sunset, which is when the whole town comes out to do the same thing, and eat seafood by the water afterwards.
- Stage 07
The Return
Up the coast road to Colombo and the flight home. Seven days, one island small enough to cross in a week and varied enough that the tea country and the beach feel like separate countries.
