Phuket with Kids: The Family Guide by Age and Season

Phuket with kids: the short answer
Go in the dry season, November to April, when the Andaman Sea is calm enough for young children to swim off a beach. Don't build your only sea days around May to October: this is the southwest monsoon, when red flags go up on Phuket's west-coast beaches, and when Thailand's Department of National Parks closes the Similan and Surin islands for the season. Beyond the season, the activities split cleanly by age. Toddlers do best with short, land-based outings and the steadiest boats. Children from about five can handle a full island day and a stage show. Teenagers can take on wake parks, deep-sea fishing and the longer speedboat days. We keep a note on each one's suitability for children on our things to do in Phuket with kids page, including the age, height or weight limit wherever the venue publishes one.
When to go: dry season, wet season, and the closed islands
Phuket runs on two seasons. November to April is dry: calmer seas, less rain, and the easiest months for young children in the water. May to October is the southwest monsoon, when the Andaman Sea turns rougher and rain is far more frequent.
Two of our own Phuket day trips are seasonal because of this. The Similan Islands and the Surin Islands both sit inside national marine parks, and Thailand's Department of National Parks closes both to visitors every monsoon. For 2026, the order runs from 15 May to 15 October — the dates are reset each year rather than fixed, so always check the current order before you book. The parks reopen on 15 October under this year's order, and our own day trips there run from 1 November to 30 April. If your dates fall inside the closure window, skip these two rather than hope the closure lifts early.
Sea safety: what the red flag actually means
Phuket's beaches use a flag system, printed in Thai, English, Chinese and Russian, and a red flag is the strongest warning on it. Local Phuket authorities post the flags to mark strong waves and winds, and the safe read of a red flag is simple: don't go in. In June 2025, three tourists drowned within a day of each other at Kata, Bang Tao and Karon beaches during the monsoon.
None of this means avoiding the sea with your children. It means checking the flag before anyone goes in, and treating a red flag the way you'd treat a closed swimming pool. If a rip current does catch a swimmer, the standard advice applies everywhere: don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the beach until you're clear of it, then head back in at an angle — the same guidance NOAA gives for rip currents worldwide.
Phuket with toddlers (under 5)
Keep the days short and the boats steady.
- Phuket Bird Park — from Rs 1,150 per person for admission (Rs 2,108 with the bird show and a shared transfer), about two hours. Entirely on foot at your own pace, which suits a toddler's shorter attention span.
- Racha and Coral Islands by Speedboat — from Rs 3,353 per person meeting the boat at the pier (Rs 4,024 with a shared transfer), about eight hours. The crossings are short, and our own note on this trip says toddlers can manage the shallows with a parent; stay on the beach rather than snorkelling if your child isn't ready for it.
- Maiton Island Sunset Catamaran — our own note on this trip says a catamaran is steadier than a speedboat, and toddlers are welcome aboard with the usual care near the water. From Rs 5,557 per person, about six hours.
Phuket with children 5 to 11
Most of the island-hopping days open up once a child can swim a little and sit through a longer day, so this age band has the widest choice of activities.
- Siam Niramit Phuket — from Rs 3,737 per person for a Silver seat (Gold or Platinum add dinner and transfer); gates open 5:30 pm and the show ends 9:50 pm, closed Tuesdays. Before the seated stage show, children join in rowing a boat along the canal, dressing in Thai costume and cloth weaving in the recreated Thai village.
- Krabi's Four Islands by Speedboat — long at about nine hours for a toddler, but our own listing notes that older children who enjoy swimming and beaches do well on it. From Rs 4,311 per person meeting the boat at the pier (Rs 5,036 with a shared transfer).
- Hanuman World Zipline — from Rs 3,529 per person for the 10-platform zipline, ticket only. The park's own FAQ sets a minimum age of four, a weight of 15 to 120 kg and an accompanying adult, and says the harness usually fits from about 100 to 110 cm tall, so check your child's height and weight before you book.
Phuket with teenagers
Teenagers can take on the longer, more physical days that don't suit younger children.
- Phuket Wake Park — from Rs 3,066 per person, 2 or 4 hours. The park publishes no minimum age or weight limit, so ask about lessons for younger riders, and make sure your teenager can swim confidently.
- James Bond Island by Speedboat, with Sea Canoeing — the canoe stop means stepping between boats and sitting low on the water, which is why we've placed this one with teenagers rather than younger children. From Rs 3,066 per person meeting the boat at the pier (Rs 3,784 with a shared transfer), about eight hours.
- Phuket Deep-Sea Fishing, Full Day — from Rs 6,516 per person, about eight hours with a shared hotel transfer. Our own listing is blunt: not suited to young children. For a teenager who likes being on the water, though, a full day of trolling and bottom fishing is a genuinely good outing.
Getting to Phuket from Ahmedabad
There's no direct flight from Ahmedabad to Phuket. The realistic route is Ahmedabad to Bangkok direct on Thai Airways, a little over four hours, followed by a domestic connection to Phuket, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes in the air. Build in at least two to three hours at Bangkok for the connection and immigration, so treat it as the better part of a day door to door rather than a quick hop. Or fly IndiGo with one change at an Indian hub such as Delhi or Mumbai — both connect nonstop onward to Phuket — which avoids the Bangkok transfer altogether.
If you haven't sorted entry requirements yet, our Thailand visa guide for Indian passports covers the current process.
FAQs
Is Phuket safe for kids?
Yes, with two real caveats: check the beach flag before anyone swims, especially from May to October, and match each activity to your child's age using the limits on each listing rather than a general list. Both fatal incidents we found this run happened when swimmers went in despite a red flag flying.
What is the best time to visit Phuket with kids?
November to April. The Andaman Sea is calmer, rain is less likely, and the Similan and Surin parks reopen on 15 October under the Department of National Parks' 2026 order; our own day trips there run from 1 November to 30 April.
Can toddlers go on Phuket's island-hopping speedboat tours?
Some, not all. The Racha and Coral Islands speedboat trip notes that toddlers can manage the shallows with a parent; if you want a steadier boat, the Maiton Island catamaran welcomes toddlers too. Longer days built around open-sea crossings, such as the Similan Islands, Surin Islands or Krabi's Four Islands, say plainly that a full day at sea is a lot for a toddler, even where older children on the same trip do well.
Should we combine Phuket with Krabi on the same trip?
It works well if you have six days or more. Our Phuket–Krabi Island Hopper runs 6 days and 5 nights, suits families whose children are comfortable in open water, and covers both coasts properly rather than squeezing Krabi into one long day trip from Phuket.
