The story
Phang Nga Bay, in the province next to Phuket, is largely Ao Phang Nga National Park: about 250,000 rai, or 100,000 acres, of islands and sea on and off shore, a national park since 1981 (Tourism Authority of Thailand, checked 24 Sep 2026). Its landmark is Khao Tapu, a limestone column about 20 metres high standing alone in the water, worn slimmer at the base than at the top so that it looks like a nail, which is what its Thai name means. It was known to visitors before the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun was shot there, and has been called James Bond Island ever since. Forty metres away, Khao Phing Kan is a hill that split in two, its smaller peak leaning on the larger at about 75 degrees, with a strip of sand between the islands and stairs up the side to a view over the bay.
The operator's speedboat version adds a spell of sea canoeing to the day, which runs about 9 hours on their sheet, with a shared or private transfer from your hotel. The sheet names James Bond Island, canoeing and the fee; it does not give the pier, the other stops or whether a meal is served, so your captain sends the operator's programme for your date.
What it feels like: two speeds in one day. The speedboat makes short work of the open water, then everything slows down in the canoe. Low on the water, with the engine off, the limestone walls rise straight above you, streaked black and orange and hung with green, and the only sounds are the paddle and the birds. That quiet stretch is what the canoe option is worth paying for. Then the famous rock, narrower at the bottom than the top, and a busy little beach where everyone lines up the same photograph.
Who this suits, and why: friends groups and families with teenagers who want more than a boat ride; honeymooners and couples for the calm of the canoe; active seniors who are happy stepping from a boat into a canoe. The speedboat can bump in a swell, so anyone prone to seasickness or with back trouble should say so before booking.
