Nepal Visa for Indians 2026: No Visa, Which ID to Carry

Nepal Visa for Indians 2026: No Visa, Which ID to Carry

Indians do not need a visa for Nepal and pay no visa fee: you need only an accepted photo ID, and a valid Indian passport or Election Commission voter ID works for adults by air and by road (Nepal Tourism Board and Embassy of Nepal, New Delhi, checked 16 Oct 2026). Our Nepal trips from Ahmedabad start from ₹42,999 per person for 6 days, with return flights (prices checked 16 Oct 2026).

Our Nepal trips include return flights from Ahmedabad, hand-picked stays with daily breakfast, transfers, the listed experiences and a trip captain, plus trekking permits on the trek. GST and TCS are shown in your written quote.

Prices checked 16 Oct 2026 from our live trip pages. Entry rules checked with the Nepal Tourism Board and the Embassy of Nepal, New Delhi, on 16 Oct 2026.

Do Indians need a visa for Nepal?

No. The Nepal Tourism Board's visa page puts it plainly: "Travelers of Indian nationality do not need visa to enter Nepal." There is no form, no fee and nothing to apply for before you fly. At immigration you show one of the accepted identity documents below.

The Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi lists tourist visa fees on its visa page, but its rule for Indian citizens covers only which identity documents to carry. Neither page sets a limit on how long an Indian citizen may stay, so there is no visa validity to track; if you plan a stay of several months, check with the Embassy of Nepal before booking.

Which ID documents are accepted for Indians?

The two official pages we checked on 16 Oct 2026 give slightly different lists. The Nepal Tourism Board lists documents for entering and leaving Nepal. The Embassy of Nepal lists documents for Indians over 10 years old travelling between India and Nepal by air.

The safe rule for every adult: carry a passport or a voter ID. Both lists accept them, and they work whether you fly or go by road.

Is Aadhaar accepted for Nepal?

Not according to Nepal. The Nepal Tourism Board's page, checked on 16 Oct 2026, says the Aadhaar (UID) card is not an acceptable travel document, and the Embassy of Nepal's list for air travel does not include it.

You may read otherwise. In January 2019, Business Today reported that India's Home Ministry had allowed Aadhaar as a travel document for Indians under 15 and over 65 visiting Nepal and Bhutan. Nepal's own pages do not reflect that, so do not rely on Aadhaar at a border or an airport counter. Carry a passport or voter ID, and keep Aadhaar as an extra photo ID if you like.

What do children and elderly parents need?

Children

For children, the two pages differ, so plan for the stricter one:

  • By air, aged 10 and over: the Embassy of Nepal's list is a passport, a voter ID or an emergency certificate. Only citizens aged 18 or over can enrol as voters (Election Commission of India, checked October 2026), so in practice a child of 10 to 17 needs a passport to fly.
  • By air, under 10: the Embassy's rule covers travellers over 10 and does not say what younger children need. Ask your airline before booking.
  • By road, under 18: the Nepal Tourism Board accepts an identity card issued by the school principal.

Our advice for families is simple: get a passport for every child. It settles the question at every counter, and it is the document you need for the next trip abroad anyway.

Elderly parents

For parents above 65, the Nepal Tourism Board also accepts a PAN card, driving licence or ration card with a photo and age proof. The Embassy's list for flights names only the passport, voter ID and emergency certificate, though. Since our trips fly from Ahmedabad, parents should carry a passport or voter ID, which most senior citizens already have.

Neither page sets a separate rule for seniors beyond this. If anything about a document is unclear, confirm with the airline or the Embassy of Nepal before you book.

Is the rule the same by air and by road?

Not quite. The Embassy of Nepal's rule, in force since 1 Oct 2000, is written for Indians over 10 travelling between India and Nepal by air. The Nepal Tourism Board's list applies to entering and leaving Nepal in general and is broader, adding documents for children and seniors.

The passport and the voter ID are the two documents both lists accept, so either one works for an adult by air or by road. Airlines may also apply their own check-in rules, so check with yours.

What should you carry for a Nepal trip?

  • ID for everyone: a passport or voter ID for each adult and a passport for each child, plus a photocopy kept separately.
  • Warm layers: Kathmandu sits at about 1,400 metres and Nagarkot at about 2,100 metres, and dawn viewpoints are cold.
  • Walking shoes: on the Poon Hill trek, boots and layers are what you need; no technical kit.
  • Travel insurance: it is not included in our trip prices.
  • A doctor's view for the mountain flight: the Everest flight cabin is not pressurised, so anyone with a heart or lung condition should check with a doctor first.

Which Nepal trips can you take with this ID?

These Nepal trips need only the ID above. Prices are per person, as listed on 16 Oct 2026.

FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for Nepal in 2026? No. The Nepal Tourism Board says Indian nationals do not need a visa to enter Nepal, and there is no fee. You need only an accepted photo ID, such as a valid passport or a voter ID (checked 16 Oct 2026).

What ID does a child need to fly to Nepal from India? For children aged 10 and over flying between India and Nepal, the Embassy of Nepal accepts a passport, a voter ID or an emergency certificate, so in practice a passport. For children under 10, ask your airline; we suggest a passport for every child.
