The story
The trek to Base Camp takes twelve days. The helicopter takes about four hours and lands you at Kala Patthar, at 5,545 metres, with Everest directly in front of you.
It is expensive and it is the only way to stand there if you do not have a fortnight. Breakfast at Hotel Everest View on the way back, at 3,880 metres, is included and slightly absurd.
What happens
The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.
-
Lift off from Kathmandu at first light, because the Khumbu weather closes in as the day warms and the whole flight is built around beating it. Up the valley to Lukla for a refuel, then on over Namche and the Khumbu glacier, with Base Camp and the icefall below you. The landing is at Kala Patthar, 5,545 metres, where you get out with Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse directly in front of you; because of the altitude and the weight limits, groups are usually split and shuttled for this part, so your time on the ground is short and carefully managed. Breakfast afterwards at the Everest View Hotel at Syangboche, 3,880 metres, which is a civilised and faintly ridiculous thing to be doing at that height, and back in Kathmandu by around midday. Oxygen is on board throughout and the whole thing is weather-dependent, so we build flexibility into the date.
