The story

The ideal first Himalayan trek: forgiving trails through rhododendron forest and stone villages to Poon Hill, where dawn lights up the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges at once. No extreme altitude, maximum reward.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Arrive in Pokhara, which sits at 822 metres beside Phewa lake with the Annapurna range standing directly behind the town. The afternoon is lakeside, a gear check and the briefing. This trek needs boots and layers rather than technical kit, which is most of its appeal.

  2. Drive to the trailhead at Nayapul and start walking. The first day is gentle, along a river valley through terraced fields and small settlements, climbing to Tikhedhunga at around 1,500 metres. Three to four hours, which is a deliberate easing-in rather than a wasted day.

  3. The hard day, and it is genuinely hard: a stone staircase of well over three thousand steps up to Ulleri, then a gentler climb through rhododendron forest to Ghorepani at 2,860 metres. In spring the forest is scarlet with flowers. Six hours, and you will feel every one of them.

  4. Up in the dark for the forty-minute climb to Poon Hill at 3,210 metres, arriving for sunrise on Annapurna South, Machapuchare and Dhaulagiri, which is a 360-degree panorama of 7,000 and 8,000-metre peaks. Back for breakfast, then on through forest to Tadapani.

  5. Down to Ghandruk, a large Gurung village of slate roofs and stone paths with the mountains still filling the skyline behind it. It is a gentler day, mostly descending, and the village is the most attractive place you will stay on the walk.

  6. Out to the road and back to Pokhara and the lake. A hot shower, clothes that are not the ones you have been wearing all week, and a lakeside dinner with the range you have just walked into visible from the table on a clear evening.

  7. Fly home, usually via Kathmandu. Six nights, a high point of 3,210 metres, and the best ratio of Himalayan sunrise to physical suffering available anywhere.
