Ladakh Trip with Family 2027: Plan and Trips from ₹28,999

Ladakh Trip with Family 2027: Plan and Trips from ₹28,999

Yes, Ladakh works for a family trip if you fly into Leh, rest for the 48 hours the Leh district administration asks of every tourist, and keep the highest, coldest nights out of the plan; our 6-day family trip from Ahmedabad costs from ₹28,999 per person with return flights, stays, breakfast and dinner, permits and an oxygen cylinder in every vehicle (prices checked 16 Oct 2026). For a family of four that comes to ₹1,15,996 before GST, and the 2027 season to plan for is June to September.

The family trip price includes return flights from Ahmedabad to Leh, five nights' stays with breakfast and dinner, permits, an oxygen cylinder in every vehicle and a trip captain trained in altitude first aid. Lunches on the road, optional add-ons, tips and personal expenses are extra. GST and TCS are shown in your written quote; TCS applies only to trips abroad, so there is none on a Ladakh trip.

Prices checked 16 Oct 2026 from our live trip pages. Acclimatisation advisory and road seasons checked with the District Administration, Leh (leh.nic.in), and permits and fees with the LAHDC Leh permit portal (lahdclehpermit.in), in October 2026.

Is Ladakh suitable for a family trip?

Yes, for most families, as long as the plan respects the altitude, which affects children and grandparents as much as anyone.

The District Administration, Leh says all tourists arriving in Leh must undergo at least 48 hours of acclimatisation before going on to higher areas such as Khardung La and Pangong Lake, and that they may visit nearby areas of Leh town during that time (leh.nic.in, checked October 2026). The health advisory on the official permit portal adds:

  • No physical exertion on the first two days in Leh.
  • Drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day, and keep the first day's meal light.
  • Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and sedatives.
  • Road travel does not help acclimatisation, so arriving by car is no shortcut.
  • Headache, nausea, coughing, breathlessness, disturbed sleep or loss of appetite are warning signs; for severe symptoms, see a doctor at once.

The advisory also names a medicine some travellers take before the journey. Whether it suits anyone in your family, children included, is a question for your doctor, and so is the trip itself for anyone with a heart, lung or blood pressure condition. We plan the pace; we don't give medical advice.

How many days do you need to acclimatise in Leh?

At least 48 hours before you go higher, according to the Leh district administration. In practice that means two nights in Leh before crossing to Nubra. This is how the Family Cut is paced:

DayPlanWhy
1Fly into Leh and restThe 48 hours start here; short walk at most
2Thiksey morning prayers, Shanti Stupa by road, Leh marketNear Leh, no higher than where you slept
3Over Khardung La to Nubra, Hunder dunesAfter 48 hours in Leh; a short stop at the top
4Back to Leh via villages, lunch in a Ladakhi homeA gentler day
5Pangong as a long day trip, back to LehNo cold camp night at the lake
6Fly home

The hotel in Leh has oxygen support, every vehicle carries a cylinder, and there is a doctor on call every hotel night. No alcohol for the first 48 hours applies to the adults.

Which months is Ladakh open, and when do the passes close?

Our family trips run from June to September, and that is the season to plan for in 2027. The Leh district administration's how-to-reach page gives the road seasons:

Way inWhat leh.nic.in says (checked October 2026)
FlightsDaily flights from New Delhi to Leh, and some from Jammu, Chandigarh and Srinagar
Srinagar–Leh highway, 434 kmOpen from May to November or December
Manali–Leh highway, 473 kmOpen from May or June to September or October

The road dates matter mainly for the bike expedition, and they move with the snow each year, so check before booking if you plan to drive. If your children's summer holidays run into June, the first half of June is a good fit.

Which places suit children and elderly parents, and which should you skip?

Ladakh is about choosing the right nights. Our view:

Place or activityChildrenElderly parentsOur note
Thiksey morning prayersYesYesNo walking needed
Shanti StupaYesYes, by roadSkip the stairs
Hunder dunes and camel rideYesYesThe ride is short; cold and windy by late afternoon
Pangong as a day tripYesYesLong drive, but you sleep in Leh
Pangong camp nightOlder childrenNot advisedOur trip pages warn of nights below freezing, even in summer
Turtuk and ThangOlder childrenNot advisedLong drives over high passes
Manali–Leh by bikeNoNoA rider-led expedition

The Family Cut is built for grandparents and small children together. The High Silence suits families with older children who want the lake at sunrise, and Turtuk and the bike expedition are for fit adults.

Vegetarian meals are available on request; tell us about Jain meals when you enquire, and carry dry snacks for the long drive days. Phone signal fades once you leave Leh, so agree on meeting points with children.

Which permits do you need for Nubra and Pangong?

The LAHDC Leh permit portal, lahdclehpermit.in, lists Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La and Tso Moriri among the protected areas. Visitors register on the portal, domestic and overseas visitors separately, and pay the fees online, with no need to visit the DC office (checked October 2026).

  • The fees: an environment (green) fee, a wildlife fee and a Red Cross contribution. A notice on the portal from the Deputy Commissioner, LAHDC Leh, dated 14 Oct 2021, sets the environment fee at ₹400 per person; the portal shows the current total when you pay, so check it before booking.
  • Foreign passports: citizens of some countries need a separate protected area permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs. If anyone in your group holds a foreign passport, tell us early.
  • On the road: carry the printed permit and the original photo ID it was issued against, because permits are checked on the way.

On our Ladakh trips, the permits are included and filed by us.

How is a family trip different from a solo Ladakh trip?

The route is much the same; the pace and the nights are not. If you are going alone, read our solo trip to Ladakh guide.
