The story

Ladakh without the roughing-it. Flights in, a genuinely comfortable Leh hotel with oxygen support, drives timed short, and the greatest hits — Thiksey's morning prayers, Nubra's dunes, Pangong's blue — at a pace grandparents and kids both survive happily.

Every vehicle carries oxygen; every hotel night has a doctor on call.

Your journey outline

  1. Fly into Leh and stop. The rest day is mandatory and, with mixed ages in the group, it is the difference between a good week and a medical evacuation. The hotel has oxygen on site, the vehicles carry it too, and the only activity is a short walk and a lot of water.

  2. Thiksey for the morning prayers, which start early but need no walking, then Shanti Stupa for the view over the town, reached by road rather than the stairs if knees object. The Leh market in the afternoon. Everything today is at the altitude you already slept at.

  3. Over Khardung La at 5,359 metres into the Nubra valley, with a short stop at the top rather than a long one, which is the right call for anyone feeling the height. Hunder's dunes in the golden hour, with the double-humped camels available to ride for whoever wants to.

  4. Back over the pass with stops in the villages on the way, and lunch in a Ladakhi home: thukpa, momos and butter tea, in a kitchen with the copper pots on the wall. It is the best hour of the trip for most families and costs nobody any effort.

  5. Pangong as a long day trip rather than a camp night, which is the whole design of this itinerary: you get the lake, the blue and the drive over Chang La, and you sleep back in Leh at 3,500 metres in a heated room instead of at 4,350 in a tent.

  6. Fly home over the Himalaya. Five nights, every major sight in Ladakh, and grandparents and small children who both came back well, which is not a given on this itinerary anywhere else.
