The story

Vietnam is the quiet chapter. Hanoi first — old quarter alleys, egg coffee, a street-food crawl that resets your standards.

Then Ha Long: an overnight cruise among the karsts, kayaking into lagoons the big boats can't reach, sunrise tai chi on deck whether you're graceful or not. You will not want the boat to dock.

Your journey outline

  1. Land in Hanoi and stay in the old quarter, thirty-six streets each named for the trade once done on it. Traffic here is a continuous river of scooters, crossed by walking slowly and never stopping, which is counter-intuitive and works. First pho, then the night market if it is the weekend.

  2. The food day, which in Hanoi is a legitimate itinerary. A crawl through bun cha, banh cuon and cha ca, then egg coffee, which is yolk whipped with condensed milk over strong coffee and much better than it sounds. Water puppet theatre in the evening: an art form performed waist-deep in a pool.

  3. Transfer to Ha Long, about two and a half hours on the expressway, and board the junk. The bay is roughly 1,600 limestone islands going out to the horizon. The afternoon is kayaking between them and a cave, and the evening is dinner on deck once the day boats have gone and the bay empties.

  4. Tai chi on the top deck at sunrise, which nobody expects to enjoy and most people do. A tender out to see how the floating communities here live and work, brunch as the boat runs back to the pier, and the drive to Hanoi with the afternoon still in hand.

  5. Deliberately free. The usual choices are the museums, the French quarter cafes, or a tailor in the old quarter who can turn something around in a day. Equally valid is a long lunch and nothing else, which after a night on a boat is what most people do.

  6. A last bowl of pho, ideally at a plastic-stool place with no English menu, and the flight home. Five nights, one of them among limestone islands, and a permanent internal benchmark for what breakfast soup should be.
