The story

Two of the best nights in Vietnam are a cabin on a wooden junk anchored in the bay, and a room in Hoi An during the full-moon lantern festival.

The bay is limestone karsts going out to the horizon, and sleeping among them once the day boats have gone is a completely different place. Hoi An is tailors, lanterns and a river that fills with paper boats after dark.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Arrive into Hanoi and stay in the old quarter, thirty-six streets that were named for the trade once carried on in each and largely still are. Egg coffee, which is yolk whipped with condensed milk over strong coffee and much better than it sounds. The train street runs between houses with inches to spare and access to it comes and goes with the current rules, so we check on the day.

  2. Transfer to Ha Long, about two and a half hours on the expressway, and board the junk. The bay is around 1,600 limestone islands going out to the horizon, and the difference between a day trip and an overnight is that the day boats leave at four and the bay becomes another place entirely. Kayaking, a cave, dinner on deck, and tai chi at sunrise if you are up for it before returning to Hanoi.

  3. Fly to Da Nang and drive down the coast to Hoi An, a trading port that has been preserved almost entirely intact because the river silted up and the money went elsewhere. Tailors will make a garment in about 24 hours from a fitting on the first evening. A cooking class starts in the market, and after dark the old town runs on silk lanterns and paper boats set on the river.

  4. A last Hoi An morning, then Da Nang for the flight home. Seven days, one night on a wooden boat among limestone islands, one town lit entirely by lanterns, and at least one item of clothing that fits better than anything you own.
