The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Fly In

   Fly into Srinagar and drive up to Gulmarg, about two hours and 1,100 metres of climb through pine forest. Boot fitting and gear collection on arrival, because the first lesson starts in the morning and sorting equipment in the cold at 8am helps nobody.

2. Stage 02

   Ski School I

   Ski school day one on the nursery slopes: the snowplough, stopping, and falling over, which is the actual curriculum. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 metres with the resort going much higher, so the snow is dry and forgiving. Kahwa by the fire afterwards, which is saffron tea and the local cure for everything.

3. Stage 03

   Ski School II

   Day two, and this is the one where it starts working: linked turns, a little speed, and the first proper green run rather than the practice field. Longer on the snow, a hut lunch, and legs that will inform you about muscles you had not previously met.

4. Stage 04

   Gondola Day

   The gondola day. Phase one goes to Kongdoori at 3,080 metres, which is where the intermediate terrain is and where you will actually ski. Phase two continues to Apharwat at 3,980 metres, which is serious off-piste country, so most of the group rides it for the view rather than the descent.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A last morning run while the snow is still hard, then down to Srinagar and the flight home. Four days of instruction, a mountain almost nobody outside India has heard of, and lift passes at a price that would buy about two hours in the Alps.
