The story

Gulmarg's powder is world-class and criminally uncrowded. This week is built for first-timers and improvers: certified instructors, gear included, and the world's second-highest gondola for when your legs graduate.

Evenings are kahwa, bonfires and the specific joy of aching in a good way. January–March departures.

  1. Fly into Srinagar and drive up to Gulmarg, about two hours and 1,100 metres of climb through pine forest. Boot fitting and gear collection on arrival, because the first lesson starts in the morning and sorting equipment in the cold at 8am helps nobody.

  2. Ski school day one on the nursery slopes: the snowplough, stopping, and falling over, which is the actual curriculum. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 metres with the resort going much higher, so the snow is dry and forgiving. Kahwa by the fire afterwards, which is saffron tea and the local cure for everything.

  3. Day two, and this is the one where it starts working: linked turns, a little speed, and the first proper green run rather than the practice field. Longer on the snow, a hut lunch, and legs that will inform you about muscles you had not previously met.

  4. The gondola day. Phase one goes to Kongdoori at 3,080 metres, which is where the intermediate terrain is and where you will actually ski. Phase two continues to Apharwat at 3,980 metres, which is serious off-piste country, so most of the group rides it for the view rather than the descent.

  5. A last morning run while the snow is still hard, then down to Srinagar and the flight home. Four days of instruction, a mountain almost nobody outside India has heard of, and lift passes at a price that would buy about two hours in the Alps.
