  1. Land, check in and take the first evening gently at Dubai Marina, which is a walkable stretch of towers, water and restaurants. Down to the Dubai Fountain at the foot of the Burj Khalifa afterwards; it runs through the evening after dark and costs nothing to watch.

  2. Up the Burj Khalifa to the observation deck on level 124, booked for the sunset slot so you get the desert going gold and the city coming on beneath you. The Dubai Mall underneath it afterwards, then across to the old town in the evening for the spice and gold souks and the abra across the creek.

  3. Out into the red dunes in the late afternoon, when the heat has dropped and the light is best. Dune bashing in a four-wheel drive, sandboarding down a face, camels, and then a camp for dinner under the stars with a fire and enough space to walk away from the noise.

  4. An hour and a half down to Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque first, which holds around 55,000 worshippers and is finished in white marble inlaid with flowers; dress code is strict and abayas are provided. The Louvre Abu Dhabi after, under Jean Nouvel's perforated dome that rains light.

  5. Ferrari World on Yas Island, home to Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster anywhere at 240 km/h. A full day if you want it, then the drive back up to Dubai in the evening.

  6. A last morning by the pool and the flight home. Five nights, two emirates, one 828-metre tower and one genuinely humbling mosque, at a noticeably lower heart rate than you left the coaster with.
