The story

Ayutthaya was the capital of the Thai kingdom for 417 years, and it sits 86 kilometres north of Bangkok on what is in effect an island, ringed by the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak and Lopburi rivers. The ruins of its temples and palaces, many carefully restored, make up the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site (Tourism Authority of Thailand). The architecture mixes Khmer and early Sukhothai styles: the tall, rounded prangs show the Khmer influence and look like the towers of Angkor Wat, while the pointed stupas come from Sukhothai. Which temples the day covers, whether lunch and entry fees are in the fare, and whether a guide rides with you are for your captain to confirm with the operator before you pay.

What it feels like: the city thins out, the highway runs north across flat green country, and then the red-brick ruins start appearing between ordinary houses and shops. The Tourism Authority singles out the temples most visitors ask for: Wat Phra Si Sanphet, with its three bell-shaped pagodas on a raised platform inside the old palace grounds; Wat Mahathat, where a stone Buddha head is held in the roots of a tree; Wat Chaiwatthanaram across the river, a large Khmer-style monastery; and Wat Yai Chai Mongkol with its reclining Buddha at the entrance. Weathered brick glows orange in the afternoon, the prangs throw long shadows, and the place is quieter than you expect after Bangkok. For a Gujarati family there is something familiar in it: the Tourism Authority notes that Wat Ratchaburana's Khmer-style stupa stands for Mount Meru, the centre of the universe in Buddhist and Hindu cosmology alike.

Who this suits, and why: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because a private car lets you stop at three temples or six, sit in the shade when you want and head back when the heat wins; couples and photographers, for the ruins in the late light; families with teenagers who like history better when it is standing in front of them. It is hard work for toddlers and for anyone who cannot walk on uneven brick in the heat; for them, a shorter list chosen with your captain is kinder than the full circuit.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Your private car collects you from your Bangkok hotel at the time on your voucher for the drive north to Ayutthaya, 86 km away by the Tourism Authority of Thailand's figure.

  2. The temples of the old capital. The operator does not list the stops, so your captain confirms them. The ones the Tourism Authority singles out include Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit beside it with its gilded bronze Buddha, Wat Mahathat with the Buddha head in the tree roots, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Chaiwatthanaram across the river, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol and Wat Phanan Choeng on the riverbank. Tell your captain which matter most to you.

  3. Whether lunch is in the fare is not stated on the sheet; your captain confirms. The Tourism Authority mentions river prawns, noodles and the local cotton-candy wrap sweet as Ayutthaya's food; vegetarian and Jain families should agree a place with the captain in advance.

  4. The drive back to your Bangkok hotel at the end of the day.

Know before you go

  • The operator names only the full-day tour and the private car. The temples, the guide, lunch and entry fees are confirmed by your captain with the operator before you pay.
  • The sheet does not say whether the fare is per person or per car. Your captain confirms the total for your group before you pay.
  • Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered for men and women, and shoes you can slip off where a hall is still in use. A light scarf or shawl in the bag solves most of it.
  • The ruins are open-air and the walking is on old brick and grass. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and plan the longer walks for the morning. Anyone with knee or balance trouble should choose fewer stops, not skip the day.
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram is across the river from the old city; your captain confirms whether your day reaches it by road.
  • These are working religious sites. Keep voices low near Buddha images and photograph them respectfully.
  • Vegetarian and Jain food is not something the sheet covers. Ask your captain to agree a lunch stop with the operator in advance, or carry food.
  • Availability is confirmed by the operator when your captain books; a booking can be declined by the supplier for a price change, allocation or stop-sale.
  • Prices are in INR. GST + TCS on international bookings are shown in your written quote.
